Hey guys I know there's a lot of information of people going back and forth on the Onkyo for their HDMI board failures. There's a 10-hour sale on the rz820 that seems like a good deal does anybody know if they have resolve these issues in the newer receivers? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks

From what I can see yes Onkyo has dealt with that particular problem and their reliability has come back up somewhat. The extended warranty program for that range of avr (those made between 2009-2012) expires this year, too.

Thanks! I have researched a little but have fell short on any solid information. Hate to bite the bullet and grab a receiver that won't last long ya know!

Onkyo still wouldn't be my choice since they dropped Audyssey but if it has the features/connectivity/amp section that works for you....fwiw I do own one of the older Onkyos (with Audyssey) that failed last year and Onkyo did repair it quickly and made it an easy process. There's a huge thread here about the warranty issues. Good luck!

Yes I see where that has upset alot of people with them dropping the audyssey. But that wasn't a deal breaker for me. I like the power this receiver puts out "130 w/ch at .08%" on sales for 559.00. Seems hard to beat.

$559 for an Onkyo when the Denon X3300/3400 is often on sale for $599 brand new (sometimes even $550 with coupons) ?

The X3400 can Output 148W x 2Ch 8 ohms, 177W x 2Ch 4 ohms.

No way I would buy an Onkyo for $559.

Ummm pretty sure that denon 3400 only is 105w/2ch driven!!! This is taken from denon website...
Power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08% 2ch Drive)
105 W
That's a far cry from 148w is there something that you know that I don't? Wasn't trying to turn this into a what receiver is better. If I wasn't worried about cash I would probably get me a yamaha but for comparable power you talking much more money.

Still, not a significant power difference between them...

25w is 23%more power then the denon. That quite a bit of a jump considering once you get over a 100w/ch receiver start jumping in price. All the way to paying 2-3k for a 150w receiver. But thanks for your info. Would like more info on info anyone has experienced any issues with there newer onkyos.
25w is less than 1dB spl difference, though. Not really that significant, just raise your avr volume by 1dB to see how little. Keep in mind it takes a doubling of power to gain merely 3dB spl. Most avrs are within a few dB of each other...

If worried about power just make sure it has pre-outs so you can add an external amp as an option.

Yep, almost bought one of those but their lack of the SubEQ feature and the rumors of the hdmi/network board issues at the time kept me away. Also has a cool feature if you want to play around with actively bi-amping speakers (i.e. it has an actual adjustable active crossover for such). My concern would be those same hdmi/network board issues as the extended warranty (if you were even eligible) expires this year....has this one already been repaired under such program? Easy to document I'd think and if so then I'd consider it.

ADTG is not talking about specs, but how much power it was actually measured to output. So his numbers are true.

Yes but if you'll look at the test not quite the same spec....always good to match like specs rather than mismatched ones...

Keeping a fan on my Onkyo's has been a blessing never an issue with HDMI for over 5 years. I'd run and get the 818 such a good deal on a avr even used. It's more power than I'll ever need + aud. I would not buy the newer Onkyo's because no aud.

Also keep in mind impedance capabilities, depending what speakers you're using. I'd prefer the Denon for 4ohm speakers myself.

I have a lower end set of klipsch speakers with 8in drivers, can't think of the exact model. Found a good buy on them a few years back off of newegg. Either way with klipsch 150w rms I have been wanting a bigger amp to get some real potential out of them. They are 8ohms speakers though. Have thought about getting a receiver with preouts then adding a amp but then the price just keeps creeping up seeing how you have to buy a fairly decent receiver before you get the preouts.

Klipsch tend to be higher sensitivity speakers, so amp power becomes less of an issue. They should have a model number on the back I'd think....

What do you mean "real potential"? You can't get loud enough now without distortion/clipping?

I agree with Denon X3xxx recommendation. It would your best bet. Do keep in mind that I also own older Onkyo 805. I work fine, but I had to do a minor repair (replacing a couple of resistors) to it, to fix the display on it. Don't get me wrong 805 is a beast, but I'd never get another Onkyo ever again.
Also, I highly recommend to purchase Denon as new or "used", not refurbished.
Used (sold by an authorized reseller, like amazon or electronic expo) more often than not means simply open or slightly damaged box. or minor cosmetic imperfections (you won't find these without a magnifying glass)
The big difference is Denon AVRs sold as new and/or used get full 3 years warranty.
Refubs only get 1 year.
