In case you missed it earlier, there is some good news for Onkyo owners who were getting poor results from their Audyssey setups:

Onkyo Mic Resolution

----------------------------------------

Onkyo has informed us that they will exchange the microphone for any customer who has the ACM-1 by providing them with an ACM-1H.

The contact information is:
Tel : 201-785-2600 (select “Product support” option)
or email: onkyoadmin@us.onkyo.com

We were not given contact info for outside the US, but I assume that the regional Onkyo offices can be contacted via their web page.

I want to thank all the members who raised the issue and those that provided us with their microphones to help us figure out how to solve this mystery. Please don't send us any more mics at this point. All of you that did will receive a replacement from Audyssey.

Props to Audyssey and Onkyo resolving the problem rather than sticking their heads in the sand and playing the deny game.

After much pain Onkyo confirmed that at least one of my receivers (my 906) is one of those affected. All I had to do is spend an hour disconnecting my system so I could get to the serial number and then hook everything back up. Anyway I should have the replacement in 2-3 weeks and hopefully that will change my opinion of Audyssey. If It works out I have two more to deal with.

Looks like they had some issues with Denon mikes as well.

Where the S/N was on your 906 sholling?
Maybe I should do it as well...

p.s.s: One the side note - this pretty important announcement was posted on

I think this is part of there reasons I find it hard to find anything on that forum... :(

Under the power plug on the back. Where my receiver is located was the hassle. It meant moving one main, then disconnecting and moving my 80lb XPA-2 out of the corner so that I could reach behind the receiver. Then disconnecting all of the cables so that I could pull the receiver out. But I took advantage of the situation to replace the mishmash of cables from the preouts to the amps with well shielded (and labeled) subwoofer cables just because I had them on hand, and pulled out an unused anymore universal DVD player and HD DVD player while I was in there.

I'm really hoping the mic was the problem because with Audyssey enabled the Song Towers and my sub had zero punch even with 300wpc and later 500wpc (@4ohms) on tap for the speakers and 1000w continuous for the sub. Audyssey is just something that I dabbled with in there because it never thrilled me. With Audyssey off it's like somebody lifted a blanket off the STs and the amps loaf. I have high hopes that the new mic will fix the problem.

When I check the bedroom 707 all I'll have to do is move a 100lb subwoofer, move an oak dresser, and then slide out the cabinet. The office's 606 will be easy.

Thank you for the info, I will follow up with Onkyo to double check if my unit is affected. I purchased the receiver in 2009

Just got email response from Onkyo how to tell if your mic is affected:
Correct mic *plug color is silver
Incorrect mic *plug color is gold

Also Serial number is located on the back (wasn't below my power cord, I'd have to look a bit more to find it) - not really easy this things weights over 40lbs :(

Okay below the cord and an inch or so to the left on mine. :p

I'm not buying the plug color thing. I just got the replacement mic this morning. You've read me all but cuss out Audyssey - well the mic made a HUGE difference. With the old mic Audyssey made the Salks sound like they had a blanket over them (muted highs and no mid-bass punch) and the subwoofer lacked any punch at all. With the new mic the difference between Audssey MultiEQ and no EQ is subtle. I'm spending the day listening and comparing but the difference in how the two mics make my system sound is huge - and both have silver plugs. :D

One thing remains the same though. Compared to my rat-shack SPL meter both mics have Audyssey setting the sub 4db below the mains. I evened that out and to my ear it sounds better with the sub even with the mains.

I suspect that years and models may differ. Now I drag out the 606 and see if I qualify for new a mic for it, then next week the 707. I don't want to confuse Onkyo support too much. I already keep the mics with their correct receivers and just to be sure I'm going to label them as they come in.

Based on the picture maybe it's the location of the knurled grip on the plug that is a better indicator of which mic is old and which is new.

You are right, I came home to find my mic is exactly as left one, except it's silver toned  ... Gives me a bit of hope to continue to crawl to find it's s/n :(
