So I went from an Onkyo Ht-R570 to the 609. I hooked them both up the exact same way and I have video but no audio. I bought the 609 a few weeks ago for a great deal (hopefully). I tried using the Arc and the optical options but neither are working. I think I am missing something but not sure where to go as the 570 was fairly simple to hook up. Btw I am very green when it comes to AVR tech.

Oh I should mention I sent it into Onkyo under their replacement/repair program due to overwhelming info about the no sound issue. That's why I am just now trying to hook it up

You'll need to share just how you have things connected and to what particular gear, although after the Onkyo repair you should have a functioning unit (had to send my Onkyo RC370 in under the program earlier this year too). For ARC is your tv ARC capable and did you enable it in each unit (the avr and tv)? Regular hdmi connection outside of using ARC doesn't work either? Did you make sure the input assignment was optical or hdmi connections?

lovinthehd...thanks for the reply. After tweaking settings I finally got the sound through the Arc settings. I spent two days tweaking and resetting and got the tv and the receiver to communicate properly. And it sounds amazing. Thanks again

Cool. Usually you need to enable HDMI-CEC in both units. FWIW the same quality of audio via ARC is avail via Digital rca or optical connection....enabling ARC can bring other issues, too.

I had an older Onkyo receiver that I had to use the optical cord to get the sound with before. But the house we bought three years ago had the wall mount hookups and surround speaker set up already including hdmi but not optical. I wanted to eliminate that cord hanging down. So I bought a newer used model which had the Arc capability. What can be the downside to the Arc?

Some ARC implementations, particularly from different brands, can yield issues for settings. On my avrs when using ARC the tv automatically switched my receiver to "TV" input instead of the cable/sat input I had setup. I no longer use any audio sourced from the tv so it doesn't matter now for my use anyways...
