awhile back i posted about an issue with the rear channel not working on his onkyo receiver. he sent it out and got it back but there is another issue. I had him troubleshoot to see if it is in fact the receiver.

here's whats happening.

when he plays direct TV the audio cuts in and out every 15 seconds. when he plays a dvd everything works perfect. when he plays music the audio is perfect but when he plays the signal from direct tv the audio is cutting in and out and i am wondering if it is a problem with the Receivers TV setting.

the audio is set up via optical.
do you think this a problem with receiver or direct tv?

i told him to next disconnect the optical cable from the receiver and connect the direct tv box right to the TV via composite and if the audio is fine then it must be the reciever.

Please post model number. That help us know what the audio menu selections are. What sre his setting setup up for. THX,Stereo,and....... Try setting all of the setups the same as the good ones. Go thru the audio menus of the working setup (write it down) then setup the bad channels and set them up the same way as the good ones. See if that does it. Does it have PCM setup?

Direct TV == Satellite == potential for audio and video dropouts (although to be fair I experience it sometimes with cable too). I doubt it is the receiver if every other device with a digital output is working correctly.

Try swapping the digital input assignments between DVD and whichever input selector is being used for the DirectTV. If the DirectTV still experiences lots of drop outs with the same input that was working fine for DVD then it is isn't the receiver that is the culprit.

I would start by using a different optical cable. Optical cables a fragile and when damaged lead to exactly this type of problem, or no sound at all.

thanks for replies, i told him i would go over on sunday to check it out. my opinion is that i think that it is the optical cable or the input port for the optical port because it has only a 3 foot cable connecting the satellite to the receiver and the optical cable is pulling at the receiver!!

either way i just got big shipment of stuff in from monoprice for my new house, i will just give him one of my cables and try another port.

so i had him disconnect the optical and set it up from direct tv satellite to the TV by composite audio jacks and viola the audio didnt cut out.

I am heading over there tomorrow. this leads me to believe it is not the direct tv and is either the optical cable or the receiver. i think it is the optical cable so i will replace it tomorrow and hopefully that does the trick.
