I just got a new Yamaha HTR 5960 to replace the Onkyo I had. I plan on giving this to my brother-in-law.Will it hurt to power it up with no speakers connected to show him some of the features/menus?

nice Yamaha. , but to the question at hand; no, it should not hurt the Onkyo.

I have used retired receivers for specialized purposes, like wireless broadcasting to remote speakers, with no speakers physically connected at all. None of them ever blew up. Many have a switch or setup option for no speakers. If you are worried, just turn off the speakers.
