I got a great deal on the Polks and decided to jump on them. Now I am looking at upgrading my receiver and sub.

I have narrowed down my receiver choices to either the Onkyo 805 or the Emotiva LMC-1/LPA-1 combo. I had never thought about going the Emotiva route until I spent some time on this website. Looking around the forums there still does not seem to be much discussion about Emotiva.

Still deciding on the sub, but I'm going SVS. Either a PB12-NSD or 20-39 PC Plus (the PB12-Plus is just so big)

I am still somewhat new to nice audio equipment so I would like to get your thoughts and pros/cons of the receivers and subs. Thanks.

The Emotiva Ultra Theater Series (Go for It). You might even want to wait till this new amp from Emotiva comes out (XPA-5-200wpc cost $699).

I would get the NEW Emotiva Pre-Pro, which I think should have the DTS-MA and TrueHD decoders.

If I had to pick between the "old" Emotiva Pre-Pro/Amp vs. Onkyo 805, I would pick the Onkyo.

Well, the boss gave me clearance for the IPS-1; now as much as it pains me... might wait for this one at 5x200... or I was also considering the monoblocks from Outlaw @ 200 per! Decisions, Decisions!!

Happy Holidays!

The Onkyo will likely have more features and connectivity; the Emotiva will likely be the better performer. What's more important to you is the real question.

Why not go for the lower end Onkyo 705 which still has preouts and the emotiva amp. That way you have a future proof receiver/pre-pro and superb amplification.

This is right up my alley. Has there been any confirmation of this?
This also would be right up my alley, so looking it up. It should be able to decode the newest formats, according to their forum mod.
With using the Cirrus CS497xx decoder.
As well checking Cirrus directly, - http://www.cirrus.com/en/products/pro/techs/T6.html

"The LMC-2!! It's what everyone wants to know about, right?

Well, here is the skinny; I'm going to post some preliminary details, images, etc. of the unit after the first of the year. I know you are all very anxious to get this advice and it is coming soon.

We have a serious development effort underway and it is going VERY well. I have just returned from China and our little baby is really cooking. I will have the first preproduction/engineering unit in my hands by Jan 1st. I'm so excited, I'm about to wet my pants, but I also have to be careful here. I want you all to have accurate info. and at the same time I do not want to release too much of this info. so early that it gives our competitors insight into what we are planning. I hate to have to do this, but this is just how it is; believe it or not we have competitors!

The LMC-2 is going to be a really great unit. It will satisfy 99% of of what most you you need and have asked for. SQ is first and foremost and I promise it will not disappoint anyone in this regard. This is what we are all about and we are never going to sacrifice SQ for useless goodies.

What is going to be really blow you all away way is the level of sophistication and elegance in the control and operating interface. It takes our products to a whole new level. Simple, elegant, beautiful. Full color, transparent OSD menus and graphics over live video. You have to see it to believe it. Wow! I feel like Steve Jobs without the money and the black shirt!!

All "legacy" video formats can be up-converted to HDMI for connection to your display. It also has an HDMI pass through function for those of you who want to do scaling down stream of the unit. "Do no harm" is our motto. It will feature full HDMI v1.3a implementation. ALL of the latest high definition audio formats are supported. Auto room correction, multi band manual EQ, lot's and lot's of practical, useful features and functionality; and a few surprises! All software is fully upgradeable via USB.

Hardware is based on the new Cirrus CS497xx decoder. Video processing is handled by the new Genesis Torino processor; this chip is no slouch, it's state of the art. HDMI management and routing is courtesy of Analog Devices. All audio components have been carefully chosen for SQ and very low noise.

This baby is the real deal. It is not a re-skinned AVR. It is not based on an existing platform. It is a new, from the ground up effort, and it is going to redefine the market for cost competitive, high performance AV processors. A bold statement, but it's the truth. If you like our build quality and SQ, you won't be disappointed; you'll be taken to the next level.

We're very grateful for your support, patience and feedback. I promise you that we are doing something really special here and you will not be disappointed.

Stay tuned, more to come in a few weeks!!

Thanks everyone; we couldn't do it without all of you!
Best regards,
Big Dan"

Don't forget that Emotiva offers a 40% upgrade discount. I just bought the LMC-1/LPA-1 combo. Merry Christmas to me! I won't be getting an HDTV until late next year at the earliest, so I don't need the latest decoders...yet. But when I do, I can upgrade to the LMC-2 for 40% off. That's a killer deal to me.

If you like ear candy then go with the Emotiva DMR-1 Receiver as it sounds amazing with movies and 2 channel audio. Compared with the Onkyo 805 Receiver it won't offer the latest incarnation of hdmi connectivity but it will surely beat it on sound and sonics. After all, that what it's all about right?

Later on you can use the generous 40 discount when they (Emotiva) announces the release of their new pre-pros. The receiver is a qualifier for the discount in case you didn't know.

Happy Listening,

Al

I dont know much about Emotiva and what they are like and dont know anyone who is using them but I can tell you that the Onlyo I have and ones that my friends have are the best value that money can buy. I have the Onkyo TX-SR875B whcih rocks and i have a buddy of mine who has the TX-SR605B and that also kicks *** but lacks certain thing but is the best bang for your buck for the features it comes with.

If you want my opinion go online and read owner reviews on these and other products that you are interested in and go into stores and ask a lot of questions and test out the receivers and see what you like and what manufacturers offer in each of there products. I know that Onkyo is great and the only real downside to the higher end models are they are hot, heavy and pricey but the 605B is none of those so again read up on them go to the stores and check them out in person and check your wallet and see what it is you want to spend.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I would like to have all the bells and whistles, but performance is most important. On the other hand I don't have an amazing ear for all the fine details. Decisions decisions.

It sounds like I should either wait until the the new Emotiva comes out next year or get the Onkyo now and add an Emotiva amp once I get a dedicated room together. I won't be back in the country until the end of January, so I will wait and see if the Emotiva is out then and make my decision.

Man, this is like choosing between filet mignon or lobster.

Oh, Boy. Here we go..........
David, I don't know about you, but I can sure hear the difference.:D

But sometimes it's not all about whether you can hear the difference.

It's about being turned on.

And when you turn it on, does it return the favor.

Just Kidding.

But seriously though, I may NOT be able to hear a difference between wires or anything like that, but I can hear a difference between a receiver and a dedicated line-level stereo preamp. I've compared the Harman Kardon AVR247 vs. Pioneer Elite SP99D Pre-Pro vs. Acurus RL-11 (all feeding an Acurus 200X3 Amp and in Direct Stereo Mode). The RL-11's sound was the clearest sound. The HK was second. The Pioneer Elite was last.

Absolutely nothing wrong with your thoughts, but I personally think that if you have even an ounce of desire for separate components, you should just wait and go completely separates.

The fact that you are actually THINKING about Separate Components tells me that you really need to just buy separates.

I really think the Onkyo 875 is fantastic. But in your case, just go separates.:D
