Onkyo - OPPO Volume low???

My g/f has a great 5.1 system with Magnepan speakers, Onkyo 806 receiver and OPPO 103 player.
For some reason, the volume maxes out at 80 and you can barely hear it at 35, to actually hear anything it has to atleast be 60 and then you can only adjust the volume between 60 and 80. The only thing we changed was upgrading the Oppo player, she had an older one and we got the new 103. We used to listen to music on about 70 and couldn't even talk it was so loud and the max was 99, now something has changed.

We set the speakers up several times with Audyssey and adjusted various things but nothing seems to work. Its frustrating listing to Steven Wilson mixes when we can't turn it UP!!!

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions? I know it has to be something we don't have set up right but I can not figure it out and its driving us nuts.... any help would be appreciated

Not sure if the 103 has a digital volume control like the 105, but that's what I'd check. Default should have been at 100, but it may have inadvertently been turned down.

The new 4 1/2 disc from SW has an amazing DTS-HD mix, but seems a bit bass heavy.

Also check the volume bias on the Onkyo for the input the Oppo is connected too. Many AVRs have a setting which allows you to lower one input or raise another input to avoid large volume changes when you switch input sources.

Also make sure "midnight" mode is turned off on the Onkyo.

Thanks guys, Yes the digital volume on the Oppo is at 100. I will have to check the bias of the imput
on the Onkyo, its actually an Onkyo 806, not a 608, not sure how to check the bias but I'll look.
Also, never knew there was a "midnight" mode on the Onkyo, so I'll have to also check that.
Thanks again, I'll let you know what I find out.

The bias should be in the setup for that input. If it has this, all inputs will have an individual, manual adjustment that allows you to adjust from calibrated level (which does not take into account the device input levels) without affecting everything else.

There may be a volume control limit that got turned on if you can only go to 80 whereas you had 99 before:
page 91 of the manual says:
With this setting, you can
limit the maximum volume.
When the “Volume Display” se
tting is set to “Absolute”,
the “Maximum Volume” range is “Off”, 50 to 99.
When it’s set to “Relative”,
the range is “Off”, –32 dB to
+17 dB. To disable this
setting, select “Off”

In any case 80 should be close to "reference volume" and it's a logarithmic (dB specifically) scale, so a change from 60 to 80 is quite significant. Often its not recommended to even run a receiver above this level (no power amps involved?).
