Onkyo HT-S990THX or TX-SR605 ?

Hi guys,

Please help me decide !

I can't decide whether I should get the TX-SR605 and go through the trouble and expense of finding good matching speakers, or buy this "Integrate receiver", the HT-S990THX, that appears more powerful adn has THX certification.

My worry is at the HDMI 1.3 level. I do not want HDMI at all. I have a legacy tube TV. BUt I want to be future proof as I plan to buy a plasma in the next few years.

Can I achieve the same quality by using Component + Optical or do I need HDMI 1.3 connector and the onboard decoding True HD of the TX-SR605 ?

To be honest I would get the surround package and upgrade the receiver at a later date when the same technology found on the TX-SR605 will be cheaper or something better for the same price is available. The speakers you can continue to use with a different receiver.

At the moment HDMI 1.3 isn't fully utilizable, but in the future when you do decide to upgrade the television it may be. The TX-SR605 is a better receiver and better SQ is possible over HDMI, but that doesn't mean that will always be the case. Sometimes the difference is negligible between the TrueHD and standard Dolby tracks, it really depends on how the mix was done and possibly when it was done.

Do you already have some speakers, if so what are they? Also do you plan to use the system for movies and broadcast TV mostly or do you listen to music a lot?

Thanks for your reply. No I don't own surround speakers just yet, except for a pair of Polk Audio RTi4.

I plan to use it for movies (standard DVD, satellite TV with 5.1 sound), and music as well. For broadcast TV it does not really matter to me, Friends in THX is probably not more funny :) huh wait, for 24 it may be worth it

Lets say I buy a blu-ray DVD player, I suspect it will have component and optical out connectors, right ? That's 1080p + THX Certified sound?

I heard the HDMI thing is only to implement DRM technologies...

Also price may matter. I do not know how much the onkyo speakers in the HT-S990THX are worth, but it's probably significant to mention I would get the TX-sr605 for around 430$ and the HT-S990THX for about 650$...
