Onkyo HT-S6200 (HTIB) Problem...HELP!

I just got an Onkyo HT-S6200 7.1 HTIB for Christmas and got everything wired up. My cable box doesn't have an HDMI output so I used a DVI to HDMI and the audio cables (red, white). I have picture and sound when watching tv now, but only out of my center channel and the sub. I tried running the Audyssey and I hear nothing then get the "Sp det err."

I double checked my wiring and the speakers are correct (color coated so its hard to go wrong). If I try listening to the radio, its the same thing.

I stayed on hold with onkyo support for over 1 1/2 hours today to have them hang up on me because it was time to go home.

HELP!

UPDATE: I can SLIGHTLY hear a bit of sound coming from my rear surround speakers but nothing from my front left/right, surround left/right

Welcome, I suggest running through the manual speaker set up starting on pg. 68. The level setup, pg. 70, will provide test tones so that you can hear each speaker if setup properly.

If you have an antenna hooked up and you lock onto a radio station, you should hear it if you select the tuner as your source.

If the CB has a digital audio output you may want to hook that up as well.

Hi, and welcome to the forum! Congrats on your new system.

AVRat has a great suggestion on trying to get test tones manually. When you do the auto set-up, do you hear anything from the speakers, or do you just an error right off?

How do you have your components connected to the 6200? Are you running the cable box to the TV, then the TV to the 6200? That shouldn't be causing an error with the auto set-up, but it certainly could lead to less impressive sound than you could be getting. Does the cable box have a digital audio output (coax or optical)? That's the way that I'd connect it to the 6200, and we can discuss that after we get your speakers working properly.

I will try to test the speakers manually. When I run Audyssey it tries to to listen, then immediately says "sp det error"

I actually just went in to my cable provider and got a new box with an HDMI output which I ran directly to my 6200 then out to the TV. Still, the same thing. I will update you guys and let you know if the manual tests work. Thanks for your input.

UPDATE: I just tried running the Level-cal and I can hear my sub, center, surr back right, surr back left. I cannot hear anything out of my left, right, surr left, surr right.

I selected "Bi-AMP" to see if it helped and I hear perfectly out of the speakers mentioned above. I still have nothing coming out of the speakers I listed. According to the diagram I didn't connect it using the bi-amp method. I tried running Audyssey while bi-amp was selected and it worked. Once it reached Surr. R/L and Front I heard nothing and it skipped it.

Try swapping the speakers around to see if it's a speaker issue. Something's just not right. If the speakers work on the good channels, then it could be a receiver problem. Any friends, neighbors, or relatives around that could help?

It's not unheard of to receive defective gear.

Well I have no idea what I did. I got everything working using bi-amp. Is there a problem with me using this setting without the wiring being bi-wired? Everything works and sounds great now. Thank you all for bearing with me and giving your advice. Let me know if I'm going to blow my house up by using this method and maybe shed some insight oon why the hell I need this setting to get it to work? With the Normal setting selected everything except my rear surr speakers work.

With it in bi-amp mode, the rears will receive the same signals as the front L/R. Not what you want!:(

Something to check/try:
Pg 44, Sp Type set to Normal
Pg 81, Zone2 set to Act
Pg 44, SB/FH set to SurrBack

Shouldn’t have to jump around in the settings like this, but it may be necessary.

Hrmm maybe thats what I was doing wrong. I wasn't setting Zone2 to Active. I will try it and run Audyssey.

UPDATE: I tried the setting your told me to use and I heard nothing out of my surround rears again. I tried the manual speaker test that Rat suggested earlier and could hear tones out of them. Then I ran Audyssey and it setup everything just fine. I could hear the tones from each speaker so I thought it was going to work. Then I try watching "The Dark Knight" and I hear nothing out of the back speakers.

Do I need to have any wires/speakers plugged in to the zone2 slots? I'm stumped.

So the speakers ARE receiving signals and putting out sound based on test tones and Audyssey, correct? So now to receive sound out of the rears from a 5.1 sountrack, you need to add a Listening Mode like PLIIx to get matixed sound for the rears. Pgs. 61-67.

I got it working! Now its time to test out a blu-ray with 7.1 sound. Thank you all again for your help. I couldn't get anything out of the rears so Onkyo support called me back and said I had a defective receiver. They said try resetting it to see if it would work by defaulting back to All Channel Stereo and I heard nothing after resetting it. So I was worried, then I changed my listening mode to PLIIx because it was set to mono and it worked. Silly onkyo support.
