Hello I just recently bought this Onkyo HT-S5100 Home entertainment 7.1 surround...and my question is regarding this particular receiver. I see many posts regarding other onkyo receivers and ps3 connectivity towards 7.1 - I am also well aware of the many occuring problems regarding hdmi-dvi (rec-tv). My ps3 however works no prob direct ps3-hd rdy tv /hdmi-dvi. I was using a optical cable knowing I am limited to 5.1...so basically my question is...is it possible at all to get GOOD 7.1 out of this receiver if i try my onkyo hdmi-dvi out to tv / and onkyo in ps3-onkyo. If this is not possible please suggest to me the next step up of a receiver any brand and model capable of giving me 7.1 surround for blu ray 7.1 movies through my ps3 within $100-300 value up from my current receiver.(knowing my tv has only dvi and component..I want the best video and audio..i would like to keep upscaling on my dvds but if thats a sacrifice towards the future of blu ray and 7.1 hd sound then oh well. As I would like to return it immediately if so. Please forgive any lack of search knowledge if anything was close enough to this to give me my answer.

Audio and Video are separate and unrelated concepts. The fact that you are using an HDMI->DVI adapter has nothing to do with 7.1 vs 5.1. Optical (s/pdif) connnections cannot support uncompressed 7.1 audio, the type you'd get from a Blu-ray disc (the bandwidth exceeds the capabality of the interface).

You will not get the 7.1 PCM signal from a Blu-ray (PS3) without using HDMI and a receiver that is capable of dealing with 7.1 channels of uncompressed PCM audio.

I know I can't get 7.1 from the optical...so should I just upgrade then? your reply confused me lol...what worked is hdmi>dvi/ps3-tv and my optical cable for audio...but of course only 5.1. What I would like to get is 7.1 is that possible in my circumstance?...if not this receiver at least another? I know the receiver is pass thru so...would that be my problem? I tried hdmi>dvi/ receiver to tv and hdmi>hdmi ps3 to receiver just a little while ago and I ended up with no sound or video...I am thinking I need a new receiver? If there is anyone with the knowledge or link with my solution please help...since I tried my only option or so I think...I think i have no choice but to get another receiver...and if I do...what would actually work with hdmi>dvi(receiver-tv for video) and hdmi>hdmi(ps3-receiver for audio)? or maybe another solution? I just would like to get 7.1 pcm in some way and what receiver if not this one..was a real dissapointment when I ran into the problem...my tv only has one dvi and 2 component...sorry for not clarifying that...

hi.. just get a Yamaha RX-V663.. its full hd 7.1 surround with hdmi.... and its under 400.. around 369..

just connect ps3 to reciever HDMI..then hdmi to dvi to ur hdtv...and voula u have 7.1 surround.

There are no cheaper 7.1 HD audio recievers than 369..

There is no bandwidth limitation that prevents 7.1 from going over optical. It's just that the newer high resolution audio codecs and PCM greater than 2 channels are not part of the specs for optical and coax.

To the OP, the only way to get 7.1 into this receiver is to use a Blu-Ray player that has 7.1 analog audio outputs (e.g., the Samsung BD-UP5000, the Panasonic DMP-BD10/30/50, the Denon 3800BCDI). The other alternative is to keep your PS3 and get a receiver that accepts 7.1 PCM over HDMI like the Onkyo TX-SR604,605,606,705,805,875,905, etc. (the TX-SR5xx are pass-through only) and the Yammy RX-V663. You can find good deals on the TX-SR604 and 605, but those have been replaced by the 606.

Unfortunately, you are incorrect. S/PDIF is a communication protocol (although the spec also describes the physical interface over coax) and a data communication protocol has a required format for the data. The data transmitted includes far more than just the audio data.

In practice the max it can handle is 16 bit / 48 kHz audio. The data format does not support 24 bits of audio and multi-channel PCM at a sampling rate greater than 48 kHz far exceeds the capabilities of the protocol. Do the math (bit depth X sampling rate x number of channels + the overhead of the data packet itself) and you'll see what I mean. Even Wikipedia has a reasonably good explanation of the data format and protocol.

By the way DD/DTS 5.1 is PCM so how does that work? Because the 'payload' of the packet (the actual audio data) is not raw samples.

I just got the TX-SR606 and it works perfect! though now I have an issue of games not playing which doesnt make sense to me at all lol...I plugged hdmi>dvi to tv and hdmi>hdmi for sound and set both video and audio on the ps3 running on HDMI for its appropiate settings...least my blu ray is working with the sound I was hoping for...now I have this new dilemma lol.

HT-S5100 and HDMI

I just bought the system and hooked up my cable and ps3 with HDMI cables and I am not getting any sound from either through the speakers. What is the issue? is there something else I need to do? I thought the whole point of HDMI was for Hi def video and audio in one cable. I dont even care if its not 7.1, i'll take 5.1 for gaming and movies for now until I get a better reciever. Please help! Both my cable and PS3 are connected to HDMI in ports on the reciever and then they run through the out port to the TV. Do i also need to use another audio cable? If so thats so disappointing and I am returning this thing tomorrow.
