Onkyo HT-R670 -- Handshake issues?

Hey all,

I just picked up an Onkyo HT-S6200 home theater system that comes with the HT-R670 receiver. I'm trying to set up the receiver with a Sony LCD TV, and it's having some issues. I have two devices (cable box and BD-DVD player) that are both connected to the TV using HDMI cables, and those work fine when connected directly to the TV. However, when I connect through the receiver, there is no picture on the TV, and while I can hear the sound at first, every three seconds it flips off (for two seconds or so) then back on, and repeats. I've tried every combination of HDMI cables (i.e. ensuring that they are good by connecting straight from the cable box to the TV, and then using only ones I know are good from cable to receiver to TV), but still no luck. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help here...

As I told you before, this is an HDCP handshake issue.

A TV being and end device is only required to make an initial handshake. However a receiver being a receiving and transmitting device is required to make repeated handshakes, and yours device obviously isn't.

Make sure, that your receiver has HDMI enabled, Make sure the ports you are using are set to HDMI.

Check carefully that your receiver is not set to a resolution not supported by your TV.

If that does not work then your receiver is not fully HDCP compliant and you will need a better grade of unit.

This issue is now so complex there are a lot of issues at the low end of the market.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it.

Not sure if I am missing something here, that was my first post on this site. Did you respond to someone else on this issue? I tried searching first...

I just checked both the manufacturer's website and Crutchfield, and they both say that the receiver is HDCP compatible, as well as the TV.

I double checked this, and the ports I am trying to use are all on HDMI.

I am trying to output in 1080p, which the TV definitely supports.

If that does not work then your receiver is not fully HDCP compliant and you will need a better grade of unit.
Per the manufacturer this is HDCP compliant, but I will search again to see if anyone else is reporting issues with this...

Given my notes above, do you (or anyone else of course) have any additional thoughts on this?

Thanks.

We had this same issue with a Onkyo HTIB, the other day, so I thought it was the same post.

We get this continuously.

Just because a manufacturer says it is HDCP compliant does not mean it is.

The Codes from Digital Content Protection LLC are complex and vague, with endless addenda, that manufacturers are left to figure for themselves. So foul ups especially with repeater architecture are common.

Problems with cable boxes are endless, and many do not have the speaker architecture done correctly.

However you say your DVD does not work, which leads me to suspect that the repeater architecture of you Onkyo is not correct. I have to assume you have your unit programmed correctly. It won't hurt to double and triple check everything.

Onkyo probably won't care less. The fickle thing about it all, is that the unit might work well with different brands of cable and DVD units.

HDMI is raw deal that is for the benefit of studios and not the consumer.

It is a raw deal in many fronts, as especially at the lower end of the food chain it often does not work. It is also leads to such complex set up issues, that users often make a mistake.

We had an experienced user make a mistake recently. So you have a lot of misery to keep you company.

The real villains are the outfit I linked.

If you are certain everything is connected and programmed correctly, that I would return that unit, and move up the food chain.

I think the whole AV arena has got too complex for inexpensive HTIBS, and getting worse.

I have had a quick look for firmware updates for your unit. I don't see any for your unit on the Onkyo site. It may be you can update firmware on your unit. Does your manual say anything about firmware updates.

If you can not update a unit it is a bad deal, as HDMI is a moving target to say the least, and the codes get out of date.
