Hey everyone I need some help figuring out wattage and compatible speakers. I recently moved and I'm wanting to upgrade the bookshelf front speakers that came with the system. I'm looking at some floor standing speakers to pair with my Onkyo HT r590 reciever. I'd really like to get a pair of klipsch synergy F3 with an impedance of 8ohm and have a max output power of 150 watts. Can my receiver power these? My living room is about 12ft wide but it's joined with the kitchen. Currently I do not have the rear speakers connected. But I don't really understand impedance and the wattage output vs continuous output etc...Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

What you're quoting is the power handling of the speaker. When the speaker specs say "power handling: 150w (600w max)" or something along those lines, that is what they are rated to handle.

The receiver puts out the power (watts) that goes to your speaker. Your receiver looks to be in the right power range for those speakers (ie, it isn't too powerful to blow them, has enough power to play them well.)

That max power output is more of a guideline where the crossovers begin to melt. You wouldn't want them playing 150w continuously for long. You will for sure damage them. Your receiver should drive them just fine.

150W sustained going to Klipsch your issue would be ear damage before speaker damage happens lol.

You can also think of it like a car - you don't use the full power of the car all the time, you only use a fraction for normal driving. Same goes for your speakers. You are normally only using a few watts and peak up to those power ratings for only a few seconds at a time during demanding listening.
