Ok so i just got the HT-R590 system. My problem is i have my ps3 hooked up and it runs blu-rays great 7.1 with audussy no problem. Music files on the ps3 work great all the speakers work. Now when i put ps3 games in the info button shows its sending 7.1 pcm sound to the receiver but its out putting it only in 2.0 im playing games that have dolby DTS and i have messed with all the sound options on the sound setting on my ps3 everything is checked for the out put types bitstream is selected. Im totally lost here. Idk if its the reciever thats not picking up the DTS or if the ps3 isnt sending the right format to it. I have searched and search and havent found anything with this problem.

Welcome to the forum!

On the PS3, try setting the audio output to "Automatic" if you've set it up manually.

On your Onkyo, do you have the "Fixed Mode" (described on page 41 of your owner's manual) set of "Off"? If not, give that a try. If that doesn't work, try the "PCM" and "DTS" settings to see if it helps.

Do the games have multiple audio tracks? I'm wondering if you have to select the surround sound option.

uncharted 2 does and i did select it and it worked. However games like madden 11 and NBA 2k12 have DTS but no option to change it. Those still play in stereo. What I'm finding is that games with the option work when I change them but ones that dont just play in stereo. I know skyrim has to have DTS cuz my buddy has this same system and he can play everything in 5.1 called him and really has no clue on whats wrong.

I think that I'm tapped out. The two things that come to mind are: (1) make sure that both you and your friend are using the same software version on the PS3, and (2) just go through each setting with him and make sure that you have the same ones.

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help. You may want to try back tomorrow. There are some serious PS3 folks on here, but they might not be hanging out here on Friday night.

I'm not familier with that model but have you gone into the receiver and set the "listening mode presets"? You have to go in and for each input you need to tell it how to handle each of 8 or 10 audio formats. Otherwise it's going to default to whatever format you were listening to last. Fortunately you only have to set these one time for each input. I'm not sure that's the problem but it's a good place to start.

Sorry I tried downloading the manual but it took a while and kept freezing. It appears that yours is the first Onkyo I've seen without that setting. There isn't a lot of information other than something at the top of page 41 about fixed mode which looks like it should be off. I'm stumped.
