Onkyo, Harman Kardon, or Denon

Hello Audioholics,

I have the Onkyo 804 with my JBL setup, but would like to upgrade my receiver since my brother wants my 804. Here are my choices:

- Harman Kardon 745 ($1000)
- Harman Kardon 645 ($600)
- Denon 3806 ($1100)
- Denon 2807 ($900)

Which one will drive my system the best? I know the 745 HK has had issues. I listen to about 75% Music and 25% Movies.
I have an expensive Denon cd player (DCM 390) that could pair with the Denon 3806, BUT would the JBL/Harmon Kardon setup sound better?

Fronts= JBL e100
center= JBL EC35
surrounds= JBL e50
Sub= JBL e250p

Thanks to all who responds!

I really dislike HK for a variety of reasons so I will leave other people to suggest that.

The two Denon models will perform very similarly so I would go and compare features and see if the extra money on the 3806 is worth it to you.

Let me ask you a couple of questions first.
What are your near term needs and down the road needs for movies and video watching? Are you going hi def video? Eventually you will need to and now is a good time to think about an upgrade that might include that possibility, or, next year you may be upgrading again.
Perhaps you need something that would handle the audio formats on the hi-def DVDs?

With Denon's 3808 and 2808 hitting the market, you should consider staying current. Or you could buy the HK and just not worry about being current because it'll be in the shop all the time ;)

The new Denon 3808 and 2808 are already out. BB MHT has had the 3808 for at least 2 weeks and they just got the 2808 this weekend. I think the 2808 was retailing for $1200. They are both very nice, really digging the new curved front face. If anything you should definitely look into one of those are they are more future proof.

Can I throw a bone in here?....

I would like to add the Onkyo TX-SR805 to that list. Newest features, aside from HQV Reon video processing (could be had on the TX-SR875 for about $500 more), 20 plus pounds on its predecessor, the model you already own.

The reasons I would go with it..

It is a killer deal, and it has more power than you could ever need for those speakers. Since you get another SR800 series receiver not much should change in the user interface, so setting it up should be like childs play (aside from heavy lifting and slightly more difficult placement due to the dimensions)

That is my vote, and I am sticking to it. I think it has all the receivers in the opening post beat, just my humble opinion though.:D
