It seems like it was yesterday when Onkyo released their first D-77 loudspeaker in Japan in 1985. This speaker earned the respect of audio enthusiast and even audio companies around the globe. It is amazing that 30 years later, they are still working on what they started back then. Not long ago, they proudly announced the release of the latest in line of a legendary speaker legacy with the new D-77NE 3-Way Loudspeaker.

This speaker features what they call a Unique Non-Pressed Cone Woofer which they developed in 1950. According to the company, the non-pressed paper cone offers clear advantages over pressed paper designs because it is tougher but lighter and more able to producing deep, rhythmic, and accurate bass. As part of Onkyo's announcement, they mentioned three main core elements that they combined to produce a signature sound worthy of all those 30 years of legacy.

First we have the 3-Way driver system which consists of their non-press technique resulting in a paper woofer diaphragm that's tougher, thicker, and lighter than conventional pressed cones. According to Onkyo, this technique improves vibration control, and provides stiffness for more accurate bass notes. In addition they included a thick metal basket and massive motor to let the woofer reach deeper bass notes with speed and accuracy. (See picture below)

The second element is the crossover network, which features German-made WIMA fixed-film dielectric capacitors and three separate coils to prevent flux leakage. It has been refined and improved to allow drivers to blend with each other more efficiently. It is important to note that each one of the drivers is connected to its own individual network circuit which always a nice thing to see in a high quality product. Another feature on this crossover is the Magnetic Distortion Cancellation Technology (M.D.C.T) which allows the high frequency driver to perform up to 50 kHz. (See crossover below)

And last but not least, we have the speaker enclosure. A combination of solid MDF material and a handmade wood bracing system to control cabinet resonance similar to the way a guitar distributes resonances as even as possible. The baffle alone is 42mm thick, so you can expect a solid feel all-around. As for connectors, this product features gold-plated machined brass speaker posts and knurled brass knobs.

So, what do you think about these speakers?
