Onkyo cp1200a turntable

Can someone please help me find the switch to release the turntable on an Onkyo CP1200a turntable. I need to replace the belt, but I can't find the release. I must be stupid or something. You'd think a person with 2 Master's degrees could figure it out. I have the belt; just need to figure out how to get in. Much thanks!

I have downloaded the manual, and there is nothing special about getting the outer part of the turntable off.

The turntable is in two parts, and to change the belt you just lift the outer part off the inner part.

If the outer part will not lift off the inner part, then the two must have corroded together over time.

If this is the case then I would gently tap around where the two parts of the turntable mate, with a soft hammer and see if that will loosen it.

If that does not work, you will need a bearing puller, but to use one and not damage the turntable, you need some experience in auto mechanics or at least small engine repair. The procedure would be very similar to removing a flywheel from an outboard motor for instance. Properly used a bearing puller will get off this apart without damaging the spindle, even if the two halves of the turntable are severely corroded together.

This is unusual as most belt drive turntables are put together this way. I have never encountered this problem in over 50 years. So make sure you are trying to remove only the outer part of the turntable.

I have had a closer look at that turntable design. Unfortunately it is a one piece turntable platter on a conical spindle. There is no locking or clip holding it on. The spindle is conical.

Unfortunately this type of design is notorious for binding on the cone.

You can not get this turntable off by yourself. You need an assistant.

One of you needs to lift the turntable up by holding only the rim of the turntable platter. Just lift it an inch or two off the working surface. The other individual needs to place a large heavy block of wood right over the turntable spindle. With the other hand he needs to rap the block of wood hard with a heavy hammer right over the spindle. Generally this will release the turntable from the spindle.

Before reinstalling the platter, apply a small amount of light machine oil to the spindle.

I did find a service manual. There are no clips to remove, or release mechanism. I see from pictures you will not be able to get under the platter. The spindle is not part of the platter.

You will need a puller to remove this platter, if you can not pull it off.

The way to get the platter off without damage, is to use a puller like this.

You need to have the claws facing outwards. Place the claws through the two openings for putting the belt over the drive pulley. Now place the center screw bar on top of the spindle.

Now with a wrench gently turn the nut on top of the threaded bar, until the platter releases.

It will come off with a pop.

In my researches I have found these turntable are renowned for the platter not coming off the spindle.

My method above is the only way I see to get this platter off without damage.
