Onkyo A/V Receivers -- Do they all run hot?

I have read many reviews of Onkyo A/V receivers and they all seem to say they they run very hot to the touch.

Is this the case for all $500-1000 Onkyo A/V receivers?

Thanks ... Alan

I always had a fan on mine, it reduced the amount of heat (to the touch) and also seemed to increase my output capability (more than likely due to Onkyo's heat detection circuitry that will limit current).

IMO, if employed correctly Onkyo receivers can present the best value.

My 875 is in a decently vented enclosure, and it always sets off the cooling fans in the cabinet within the first 15 minutes of every movie I play. The performance never seems lacking though.

On the topic of fans and the TX SR875, where is the best place to set the fans on the receiver? Or did you guys mod the case to put the fans inside?

Any other advice is appreciated, I just received my 875 but haven't set it up yet.

Every amp/receiver I own has a fan sitting on top of it.
Heat naturally rises; so putting the fan on top just makes the most sense.
The AV cabinet I have, has slots in the bottom of all the shelves to let air circulate, and I left the sliding backs off the cab, to let the heat out.
The air is always coolest near the floor. So my amps are always at the bottom, with a big space on top.

Tha, I have an 805 and the best place to put the fan is over the rear right quarter (where the video processing is taking place) that area generate the most heat. I have a simple 4.00 4" Wally World fan blowing across the top diagonally across the unit and even after two Bluray movies, mine is still very cold to the touch. Best four bucks you can spend on getting rid of the heat.

I also own a Denon 3808 and it gets about just as hot as the Onkyo 805 (so I have a small wally world fan on that one too, and both are in very open cabinets and the Onkyo is in a Bell'o open air rack with 8 inches on top, so heat isnt an issue, but added the fan anyway and it now runs way cooler.

I have an 805. It sits on top of my TV stand with the top and sides completely uncovered. It gets quite warm to the touch after a while... but I'm running 4ohm speakers which probably makes it worse. If I had it partially enclosed I would definitely want a fan on it.

I can't wait till my amps get realy hot-the sound is so much sweeter. After a good half hour they're ready to gill a steak. I used an Onkyo Receiver for years and drove it at max. power at all times and never a problem. That's a good receiver.

For the 875, the Reon chipset is supposed to get pretty warm. I don't think* you can even turn it off if you are not using it? And I think right/back is where its suppose to be... you can find out at AVS using simple search...

another 806 owner. I have open air around my receiver and it is warm to the touch, but I have never had the experience some report about being so hot you can't keep your hand on the top of it.

It runs warmer than my old receiver, but it does not get hot enough for concern.

I have an 805 about 1 year and it sits on a glass shelf ona stand and the top shelf is only 1 inch above it, and I was worried about this and bought a fan and it will not fit in this space.

After hundreds of hours and running over and touching the sides and back and top glass shelf I never have seen this receiver get really hot..no smell etc...

I would not worry about this at all anymore..

Have a fan on top of my 705, and another fan next to the PS3.

Those two running a Blu-Ray Movie = Freaking WHITE HOT

I have a 906 and it runs hot. I'm going to leave it for now, but if I have any problems, I will get a fan.
