Onkyo 885/875 Video Upscaling

I am trying to use REON video processor of my 885 to upscale SD channels my Directv HD box. I have tried setting 885's HDMI out to 'AUTO' and 1080P but I dont see any difference in PQ. Oh and display on 885 says HDMI Trough for both SD channels and HD channels. Does anyone know how to set up video upscaling? Thank you

The setup is in the first time setup -> HDMI Monitor Setup in the manual. Or in the on-screen menu go to the input/output settings and monitor out. You need to set the resolution to 1080p and it will upscale everything. There should also have been an insert that tells you how to access the REON settings that are not in the regular menu.

Try something for me. (A tip I just read about from a very good CI source).

Hold down display on receiver for 5 seconds. In the LCD display you should see adjustments for cont, brightness, saturation, hue, EE, mosquito noise, block noise and random noise.

btw, this is not in the manual.

I did, this menu didnt help either. I still dont see any change in PQ of SD channels.

Have you tried searching and asking in the AVS 885 owner's forum?

I wish I owned an 885 so I could better tell you. Ok, that's a white lie, I wish I had an 885 just so that I had an 885.

There are several locations where you have to set the resolution and video converstion. It sounds like you might have one such location, e.g., the input source selected to "Through". I cannot find the manual for the 885 but for the 876 the instructions are on page 55, 56, 94, 111 and 112. By the way, depending on you 1080p TV set, you may or may not see much improvement with the 885 doing the upscaling.

What changes did you make the the NR settings? And what are your connections to you SD sources?
