Hi all, first post after lurking for a while. Im going to be upgrading my system and have narrowed it down to these two receivers. I plan on pairing the receiver with the SVS S-Series SBS-01 package as a starting point. My dilemma is that I have a very large collection of digital music (in FLAC format) that I want to be able to access and play over my home network. It seems like the 807 would be the no brainer choice but after much research it seems that the consensus is to go with the 876 for its better video processor and THX Ultra platform and use an extender to stream my music. Is there really a huge difference in the video quality between the two to warrant the additional hardware?

Thanks in advance!

FWIW I will use this for music 50% of the time.

Do you need the better video processing of the 876? What kind of TV do you have and what are your sources?

Well thats what Im trying to determine. I am picking up a Panasonic 54" G10 Monday, besides my current blu-ray dvd I also have digital cable and xbox 360 running through my current LCD. As I mentioned in the OP I want to stream music from my home server through this as well.

With that plasma go with the 807.
Thanks for the input. Forgive my naivety, but was there a reason you feel the 807 would be a better selection for that plasma model? Just trying to learn as much as I can from the masters and avoid any buyers remorse later :)

Im pretty sure the above thoughts are based on the fact that the panny will do the video processing, not the avr;)

Onkyo 807

FYI, I am using a new Onkyo 807, while waiting for my Onkyo 906 to be repaired. Other people have commented that the 807 has an annoying clicking sound every time the sound input changes. It's driving me nutts. If I am watching a movie and a commercial comes on the unit clicks as the sound changes. This happens all the time while watching TV. Onkyo says it's normal as the sound input changes and amps are turned off? My 906 didn't do this nor any of my other receivers from Pioneer and Denon. The 807 is going back. You might want to check this out at a store that can Demo this from different sources. It's a loud clicking sound, like when the receiver is turned off.

Hi, I noticed you said you had (temporarily) an 807. I have this model and I dont notice any clicking when switching inputs.

I have a quick question if you (or any 807 owners) wouldnt mind helping me with if you havent taken the 807 back already. The THX recommended setting it talks about on page 27 of the manual that says to skip the video processing to press vcr/dvr and return on the receiver and then select skip. I can get the video processor setting to come up, defaulted to "use" but I cant change it no matter what buttons I press. Im very interested to see if it improves PQ by bypassing the video processing. I currently have the HDMI set to passthrough already in the receivers options but theres still video processing being done I believe because theres other options like sharpness control and brightness adjustments, etc.
Ive sent an email to Onkyo support and asked at avsforums in the owners thread but I havent received any help yet. If any 807 Onkyo owners can test this for me so that I know if im doing something wrong or if theres a problem in the receivers firmware it would be a big help. Thanks!

I forgot to add, my error, I do like the unit and how it sounds. For some reason even though it is rated below my 906, it sounds brighter. I haven't taken the time set it up properly. An Onkyo Rep told me that the clicking noise (on/off of the amps) is normal for this unit. I guess they use cheaper or different (worse) relays? I will be returning this unit, I just think it is wrong for this 807 to have this problem. The only relief is during a 2 hour DVD, BD, movie, or movie without commerials.

I still have the 807, I will check it out later today.

why does a commercial during a movie equal an input change and trigger this clicking? if you're watching a regular tv show or sports event do you get clicking whenever a commercial comes on?

I ask cuz I have an 807 sitting in an unopened box waiting for the weekend. It's my 3rd Onkyo receiver, but I'd consider other brands. I only need about 100W, but liked the network capability and other features, like Sirius.

Interesting on the clicking thing, I wonder if other new models experience the same thing? As it turns out I decided to go with the best of both worlds of the 876 and 807 and go with the 1007. So as of now I will have the 1007 driving a SVS STS-01 5.1 setup, a 54" Panny V-10 and the Oppo BD-83. All thats left is finding a suitable cabinet for all of this. I'm hoping all of this research pays off!

well, abt doesn't stock the 1007, so I got the 3007. hooked up; still have to run audyssey--I've never done it before. boy this thing heats up. I stuck my IR bbq thermometer in it and got 90 deg after about an hour of low volume.

I liked how when I turned it on my TV said ONKYO and everything just "worked". well, I haven't assigned the bluray dvd yet.

I got a Linksys wireless ethernet adapter. gonna see if it allows me to get sirius and pandora.

would be curious to hear your thoughts on the 906 vs 807 performance

with the lower power did you notice any large differences? any other comments? I am trying to decide vs the 2. I like the ISF features and more power of the 906, but the 4 hdmi inputs is a real limitation, i would be full already. And unfortunately find I have less opportunity to really listen to things at reference volume with kids and being in a semi so maybe the extra power isnt needed. FWIW, my 10 year old Intergra receiver also 'clicks' as you mention - i got competely used to it, even with satelitte as you loose signal it often clicks on and off.

807 Streaming issues

So up until tonight I have been enjoying my 807 immensely. Tonight I got everything working so I could stream flac files from my server (using Mezzmo). The problem is it stops playing after about 15 seconds and goes to the next track. This goes on until it gets through the selected folder and stops playing after the last song.

I have checked my router's (Linksys 610n) port forwarding settings, switched out ethernet cables and hard reset the receiver with no success on remedying this. I have searched other forums and saw only a few instances of this while playing WMA files from internet radio. Anyone have any ideas?
