I have an onkyo 805 right now - I am getting a new haloa51 (By the way I just glanced at a post questioning am I out of control? I've decided yes I am lol.) I've gone from outlaws monoblocks to the parasound 5020 and have cancelled both orders and currently have the halo coming to me. I have def tech speaks clr 3000 reference supercube(which i just ordered... 1800 watts s 14'' subs... sick!!!!) 2 bpvx/p side surrounds and two bp7004 fronts (will be upgrading fronts to bp7000sc's soon). I demoed the halo amp with these speakers - sounded beast... would make a difference or be worth it to upgrade the pre-processor from using the onkyo 805 to the integra 9.8? I'm thinkin the 805 is just as good at this point besides possible the better video processor on the 9.8. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yeah I meant to post in amp section sorry about that.

Follow up to this question - Parasound has factory refurbished on a halo a51 on audio advisor for 800 off. Is it worth it?

As you might gather from my IM you are about to receive, I would say it is completely worth it, especially with the 10 year warranty (unheard of with mass market gear). What is the warranty on a brand new product?

same thing 10 years - so basically they are giving the fully 10 year warranty on this "factory refreshed product"

If he is going to go with an external amp to drive his speakers. Then isn't a portion of what he is paying for in the receiver a waste? Will he get better sound from the Integra 9.8? Won't the Integra be more future proofed also?

Onkyo 805 vs.Integra 9.8

Future proofed?, maybe a little bit. It may be a waste of the receiver's abilities but it certainly isn't a waste of money to spend less to get similar sound performance, if not the same. I personally would stick with the Onkyo TX-SR805 and maybe even skip on the amplifier for now. Room acoustic treatments, possibly getting a bigger badder subwoofer, and taking the spouse out for nice dinner (assuming there is a spouse, and if not take one out on a date.:D) are some things that can better your situation more by spending less money possibly.:)

Here is my take on this.

I purchased an 805 several months ago and used it as a pre/pro with my Sunfire amp. I wanted to hear the new HD audio formats and thought the 805 it might be the equal of or close to my Emotiva DMC-1. At the time there wasn't much HD Audio content available and I returned it before my 30 day window expired as I thought it sounded thin and harsh in my very large room as compared to the DMC-1.

I also purchased and returned a Marantz 7002 AVR. I felt the Marantz sounded better than the Onkyo but still did not handle big movie sound tracks or orchestral music as well as the DMC-1. I recently purchased an Integra DCT 9.8 and while not without some issues, I feel the 9.8 is the best sounding most versatile audio component I have purchased (I have also owned Lexicon and Parasound). I sold the DMC-1 and am now happily enjoying all forms of music and movie sound via the 9.8. If you do some research, it really is all the professional reviewers and owners say it is including certain issues with HDMI handshake and lip sync problems with other audio gear. Such is the bleeding edge.

Pro reviewers are pretty biased, and while I don't claim to know they sound the same, I do believe that people bias based on what they believe they will hear. Onkyo has a stereotype surrounding it that their gear sounds "forward" and "bright" or "thin sounding". I find it all to be very sketchy and for the most part I ignore pro reviewers that say these things because I believe them to be completely full of BS.;)

So take reviews and remarks such as that with a grain of salt. I have owned a ton of receivers and little to no variance in sonic "character" is existent.

Reviewers are just like the rest of us, some are more reliable than others. My comments were based upon my direct experience with the products in question (other than the amp;)).
