well after A month and a half of going back and forth I finally took the plunge and purchased the onkyo 607 and I am stoked! I will be setting it up in a week when I am done building my plasma stand, I read that the setup mic should not be put on the couch which I did with my other receiver,my question is why should it not be placed on the couch? and if I was to use a tripod would I place it in front of the couch at the listening areas? and if that placement is correct is the speaker distance calibration going to be off because the distance of the mic on the tripod and the actual seating will be off about a foot or two because you sit back on the couch?

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about that. Nobody sits perfectly still in a vise anyways for the duration of the movie. Sure, some people are a little more crazy, and they'll even cover their couch (leather seating) with less reflective things like a blanket or something when running the tones. If you want to be obsessive, go for it. Vicinity of your ears is good. Try it, and see if you like it. It doesn't take long to run the auto cal.

so I can scrap the tripod idea? If I dont have to go out and buy a tripod I would like that!

A tripod is the easiest and best solution for holding the mic at the appropriate location. I wouldn't worry too much about whether you place it in front of the couches or directly behind them (which is what I do).

You don't want the mic on the couch nor do you want to sit on the couch and try to hold it because then your body and the couch itself can change the readings slightly because they interfere with or absorb some portion of the direct sound.

Really it's not exactly a huge deal. I used to do it by sitting on the couch with the SPL meter in my hand but it's a pain and far easier to spend $15 on a tripod and do it right.

A tripod with a boom is the most effective way to place the mic exactly where it should be (at your ears position when properly seated).
