Onkyo 605 Recommended?

Ok, i've been reading through the posts for a few hours now just making sure I didn't miss anything before I post my question. My current receiver (Denon) is now displaying nice scan lines on the component out, so I'm purchasing a new one. I want it to be future compatible and right now my top choice is the Onkyo 605. Here's my setup:

Panasonic tv with only component inputs (option of upgrading to HDMI with a new card)

HDR8300 DVR that has component and HDMI outputs

Xbox 360, Component only

I want a receiver that has the ability to display component inputs out a HDMI connection for when I upgrade my TV. I've seen a lot of receivers that will only do pass-through, but I want to do all my switching at the receiver, not the tv! One cable to the TV would be ideal.

I'd like to stay under $500, which the Onkyo clearly is. Just wondering if there's another option that I might be missing.

Thanks guys.

I think the 605 is a good choice, but it lacks pre-amp outs for external amps. What kind of speakers do you have?

Also, check out the Yamaha RX-V661 ($379.00) and the H/K AVR347 ($455.88).

Thanks for the recommendations. As far as speakers go, I have the Fluance HTB set. I've had them for a few years now and am very happy with the sound I get out of them. I also have a Yamaha powered sub (sorry I don't have any model numbers, its been a while and I'm at work).

I, for one, do not recommend the 605. Many of them, including mine, have a bad habit of transmitting little ticks and pops to the speakers from the processor - particularly to the surround speakers. It is a known and common problem that, apparently, doesn't bother many people. But be aware of it. If you want a nice deal on a 3 month old 605 in perfect working order - ticks and all - let me know. I want to upgrade my receiver.

I have heard this on other forums as well.

I'm really liking the Yamaha RX-V661 with all the reviews I'm seeing on it. The only feature I can't seem to locate is, does it have the ability to take the component video input and send it through the HDMI output like the 605?

Common problem. I think the problem relates to people making recommendations based on specs and features rather than on personal experience. People should limit their product recommendations to products they have actually used. Not doing so causes products with design defects like this one to get far more popularity than they deserve. I view the 605 as a flawed product and I regret having bought one. I'll do better next time.

Check page 17 of your manual.
It doesn't look the 661 does that.

Yep, I see that now! Looks like Video, SVideo and Component can come out the component, but only hdmi out the hdmi port.
