Onkyo 605 and 505..should volume level be equal?

I recently purchsed the Onkyo tx-sr605 and the tx-sr505 from an online vendor. I hooked both receivers up to the same speakers to test each unit when they arrived and for some reason the volume on the 505 is much louder than the volume on the 605. For example when both are set at volume level of 50 the 505 sounds much louder than the 605. Could this mean that the 605 is defective or damaged?

The receivers have different power ratings and different scales for the volume control so you cannot compare SPL by using the same number on the volume display. That type of comparison would be the same as trying to compare a Yamaha to the Onkyo even if both had the same volume range of 0 - 100.

The number on the volume display is just one point on a scale from minimum to maximum and you cannot correlate SPL between models or brands based on that meaningless number. Both models have enough power to output reference level sound pressure levels but the values of the channel trims and volume number needed to reach that level will be different.

I just replied in hte other (duplicate?) thread. Basically what MDS said, though I think he explained it better. My 2 recievers, both Denon, are very different in hte volume # shown for the same spl.
