I see that Audioholics is advertising Onix Rockets on thier website. Has anyone heard of the Rockets sold through www.AV123.com Does anyone own them that has some input as to how they sound and build quality. Thanks

I guess by the amount of views vs. Replys...no one has a good or bad thing to say about them.....are they new to the industry?

They've been around a few years. Build quaility is good. Their plant, Sound Arts China, builds cabinets for quite a few high end speaker companies. Top notch customer service. I've heard several of their speakers. Some I really like and others did nothing for me. It is a matter of my "speaker voicing" likes not the quality of the speakers. Go to the av123.com forum or audioenvy.com to see if their is someone in your area willing to let you listen to theirs.

Yeah, Mark Shifter is cranking out some beautiful cabs, and he's now making Danny Richie cabs for GR Research's Alpha linesource speakers, and he's making cabs for VMPS (at least for the RM30, RM40 & 626R- not sure about the RM1/RM2). I've only seen them in pictures, albeit some very high res ones- they look great.

I've never heard a Rocket speaker, but I know they have a large & loyal following. Their upper end "Reference" series is reportedly very good and stacks up very well to much more expensive competitors in the regional shootouts that I've read.

I think the AH staff may be reviewing a Rocket of some type in the not so far off future, but I'd have to confirm that with Gene or Clint.

We are testing a few of their speakers and are coming out with a review of one of their subs shortly. Stay tuned....

Sorry Gene, What does "shortly" mean?
One month, 3 or 4 months?
My wife just told me my front speakers are not very good at the high volumes, when she & my two little girls "practice dancing".
I smell upgrade!

Gene,
What about someone doing a review on one of the Rocket Tower Speakers or even a 7.1 set up using Towers for L & R.

Camisano - I recently helped a friend set up his Rockets. He has 750's and the RSC200 (bigfoot) for the front end, and a pair of 550's for side surround duty.

Initial impression was how beautiful these speakers were/are. They came very well packed with rings of foam around them. They are also very very heavy. My friend had also ordered the risers, but they did not arrive with the speakers (he has them now - not sure if he has set them up yet or not).

Took us a while to get everything set up - and my 2 and 1/2 year old was there running around as well, so it wasn't easy to evaluate them. I can say though that they do have a very unique sound to be sure - and I've read a lot of posts from owners who just love them. The 550's are more forward then the 750's. I did not get a chance to really listen to 'bigfoot' yet so I can't comment on that one at all. I have read a lot of posts over at AV123 of people who are upgrading their 750's to 850's or 1000's (an 850 with a powered sub). Don't know what that means - you'd have to ask them as to why they are doing it.

Gene - other than the sub, what other speakers are you reviewing from the Rocket line? Is it the newer models (850's and 1000's) or the older (now) ones (550's and 750's).

Looking forward to your review of them - I have never found a professional review of the 550's or 750's, I've only read subjective comments from owners and people with perhaps another agenda.

Camisano, sorry I can't be of much more help to you. As I have already stated, I really didn't get a chance to sit down and really 'listen' to them. However, my personal taste is for a neutral, detailed speaker. From what I heard of the 550's and the 750's, the 550's are more to my liking.

Not new at all. They have been around for about three years now. While I don't personally own any Rockets, (well, I do have a set of the TYKES in a gaming/HT rig for my two girls), I have heard them many times.

First to their build quality. It is first rate furniture grade all the way. Curved sides are not an easy thing to do, by any means. Ask any woodworker the trials and tribulations involved. Second, they bookmatch real South American Rosewood or Macassar Ebony veneer on the sides, back and fronts (a process where by the veneer is painstakenly opened and sorted from the original fletch of veneer and matched exactly (each single slice of venner is mated to the slice right above or below it in the fletch, so that the grain on one piece is a perfect mirror to the next). The two pieces of veneer are then hand sewn together not taped like many, many others do.

Finally the top and bottom "caps" are done in a Piano Gloss black laquar clear coat. So nice in fact that because of the "depth" of their sheen, they almost look wet. Couple that to the lower gloss of the veneered part of the cabinets, you get one fine looking loudspeaker (no fake vinyl "woodgrain wraps here)!

As to the sound.... I find that very subjective and you really do need to listen for yourself. I PERSONALLY like the RS-550 MK II's over the much more popular RS-750's. Enough can't be said though, on what the 750's can do though using those four 5.25 inch drivers. The VIFA Ring Radiator tweeter needs no introduction. It is arguably the finest tweeter that money can buy. It is used on MANY, MANY super high end speakers costing thousands more than the Rockets.

I would, like an earlier poster said.... check out the AV123.com web site for an audition in your area. Or, you could post a request on www.audioenvy.com and try to find a demo close to where you live.

Bottom line.... they are a WONDERFUL series of speakers with an EXCELLENT build quality backed up by personal customer service that is second to none. How many other Internet Direct manufactures or owners will post their personal cell phone number on their Forum? MLS insists that you contact him personally on his cell if you are not COMPLETELY satisfied in every respect.

Good luck in your search!

Thank you for the information you all have given me. It is appreciated. I will try to see if I can find someone in the area so that I can demo them.

They've been around for a little while and the man behind AV123 Mark Schifter has been in the audio industry for a long time and has been a part of several very high end speakers.

You can find reviews and other news about them here: http://www.av123.com/about_news.php

Hey Chris.... anytime. This is a fun hobby and most of us, you will find, are more than willing to help INCLUDING sometimes saying that "we don't know" and offering advice on where to find the answer.

Once again, good luck in your search!
