If you are going to spend any time watching movies, you’re going to need a sub regardless. This is all true and valid. But as a bookshelf speaker owner, I’ve always looked at pics of systems running floorstanders in a room smaller than mine and wondered… What if… So, it was with great excitement that I accepted the assignment to review the Rocket RS450s.

Man those look pretty! Nice review, but one question. Are these bookshelf speakers or floor speakers? It says in the pros "Good bass extention for bookshelf speakers"

Floor Speakers.
Your point?

I listened to the RS750 SEs and I liked them, but I wasn't blown away. They are gorgeous though.

They are bookshelf speakers in a floorstanding cabinet since the drivers don't see the entire box volume. Its mentioned in the review.

My point was that they are floor speakers, It was a response to Sheep, Had you followed the conversation perhaps you would have known that. ;) Had sheep read the review more closely perhaps he would have known that. Also. ;) :)

The AREN'T floor standers, technically, as Gene points out and as mentioned in the review.

My speakers cost more than my car :D I could have had a much nicer car had I gone with cheaper speakers, but it is all about choices :)

Actually you seem to be the one who is wrong and didn't read the review correctly.

Unfortunatly there is no entry in any dictionary for "floorstanding speakers" But since when did anyone call a speaker that is built into one cabinet that stands 37 5/16" tall a bookshelf? And hey, Im not the one who made a point to change the review title to: "Onix Rocket RS450 “Floorstanding” Loudspeakers"

Ok so perhaps cubic internal volume speaking it could be a bookshelf speaker, But it is a floorstanding speaker.

From AV123- "The RS450 is a perfect loudspeaker for use in a home theater or music system. Why go with a monitor/bookshelf loudspeaker on a stand when you can upgrade to a tower with the same footprint and nearly the same cost?"

Next time i'll just stay away from such meaningless arguments! :)

AV123 review

Tom,
Good review. I hope to see more reviews of AV123 gear like their Onix Reference series speakers and the Emotiva UL Pre-pro and Amp.

Ascend does basically the same thing with the 340s by adding the base to make them appear to be "floor standing" speakers, though the cabinet seen by the drivers is unchaged. All I was saying, and I think that is what Sheep was getting at too, is that they were essentially a bookshelf in a floorstanding enclosure, and it is a bit misleading - clearly, by appearance they are a floor standing speaker, but in execution, techincally, they are not.

How about just calling them Floor Standing Bookshelf Speakers? :D

Any speaker can be a floorstanding speaker. It's just a question of how tall you are.

these had been on my shortlist, but the fact that they're unstable is a total deal-breaker, considering i have a 4 yr old boy.

good thing i've found another pair of speakers that i've completely fallen in love with, by Rega.

my question would be, if you cannot afford stands for bookshelf speakers, and have to place them on the floor, would they then become "floorstanding speakers," or maybe "mini-me towers?"

It seems like a waste of unused volume which would extend the bass response.

FWIW, check out the Swan towers. Swan and AV123 used to be sold under the same name, and AV123 broke off several years back. Swan uses larger drivers for better, more efficient bass response, and still has the beautiful cabinets. Newegg.com usually has some nice deals on Swans. They're one of my favorite tower speakers.

Tom - nice review, as always.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I have been wondering this for awhile. Where these reviewed as a bookshelf or floorstander. Or are the ratings the same regardless of what it is? I ask because one of the pros for these are "good bass for a bookshelf", but they are given a 3 for extension..two less than the sierra 1. And a 3 doesn't seem like it would be all that bassy. Have another month or so till my pair show up and just getting antsy to hear them.
