Has anyone had an opportunity to check out the Rocket 850?

There are plenty of people who owns these speakers. They have an owner's thread at avsforum. Have you have the chance to audition them? When onsale, they are hard to beat. At retail price, I would probly would look elsewhere. They do have a long wait time.

I have owned a pair for almost a year now and think they sound great. Granted it was an upgrade from an old pair of JBL bookshelf speakers. If you head over to the AV123 forums, many members over there will let you audition them.

Hey Bob,

Personally, I think they are great speakers. But also keep in mind that this particular price class is very competitive. Personally, I think this market is extremely over saturated! There are so many great speakers to choose from. It can be quite daunting. But take your time. it's worth the wait.

As for the Rocket's, I'm not going to try to sell you on them just because I own them. The only real way to know is to listen for yourself and decide, and keep your eye out for a sale. That's what I did. They have amazing sales from time to time. Don't pay full price for them!!!! Here is a deal from their website. Not sure if this is still going on though. It was limited quantity:

http://av123.com/component/page,shop.product_details/category_id,19/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,395/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,37/

Also, if you scroll down from that page you will see some links to some reviews of them. They should give you a general idea of their particular sound. Just keep in mind that reviews are very subjective, but they are a good starting point.

What you should do is listen to as many speakers as you can and pick the winner. I think the Rocket's are an excellent choice to put on the list though. If you are ever in the area, feel free to stop by and have a listen! I'd love to help. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong by getting these. They are excellent! But again, buying speakers is such a personally decision. Everybody has their opinion. If you have any questions about these speakers, I probably have the answer for you and if not, I can probably find out. Good luck, Bob.....and don't forget to have fun and take your time. I think it took me about a year before I finally decided on these. But then again, I tend to over analyze everything. :D

Oh, I forgot to ask what this system will be primarily used for? The answer to that question could determine whether the 850's would be the best fit for your application.

We had a speaker shootout at my house a year ago, and someone brought the 850's and I felt they were extremely close to my Paradigm Studio 100's, with the Studios having the slight edge.

I think they are a great bargain in a speaker choice when they are on sale or used. They are out of stock right now.... so lord knows when the availability will come through....

Dealers are closing out Paradigm Studio's like crazy these days in anticipation of the new .v5 lineup coming out.... just another option to throw out there..

Those Paradigm's are nice, but I haven't seen a side by side comparison. If they are on closeout, do you know what they are going for right now? Maybe Bob will chime back in to let us know what his budget is. That may be the deciding factor in the end.

I've seen 100 v4 for $1800-$2000. Don't they retail for $2800?

The Rockets have some fantastic woodwork going for them. Hard to imagine a better cabinet for anywhere near the money. I've never heard the 850's but I did own a pair of Ref1s, fwiw. The F'n'F was terrific.

I am looking at getting the Rocket 850's as well. From what I have read they seem like a good quality speaker at a very reasonable price (on sale). Soundman, I will be PM'ing you soon (I am in NC as well).

BTW, BoB, did you end up getting these or did you go with something else?
