i have my oppo 980h that i use for DVD's, SACD's and DVD-A use. i run it into my Denon AVR. i also have a seperate 2 channel system. recently i have been downloading some hi-rez 2 channel cd's which the oppo can play. so i have 2 questions. can i run two lines out (HDMI out to the denon and RCA out to the 2 channel preamp). and if i can do this, is there a way to have the audio setup so that when i am listening to the hi-rez cd's it is in full range stereo and when listening to multichannel media it is in 7.1 without having to re-do the setup every time? hope some of this makes sense, i am pretty new to this multi-channel thing.

The analog outs use a different setup so I think this will work the way you are describing. HDMI uses the receiver's speaker settings while the analog outs use the player's settings.

Looking through the manual I did not find anything that specifically states that it could not be done. On Pg 48, the is a setting to turn the HDMI audio off, but there is no corresponding setting for the Analog outs. So, I believe you should be good to go! No better way to confirm this than to try it out. I cannot see any harm coming out of it.

Last but not the least, being HDMI 1.2a, it will not pass SACD and DVD-A over HDMI. For these formats you will have to use the Analog Outs.

AFAIK, V1.2a does pass both SACD/DVD-A over HDMI. I have 2 Oppos (981 + a 983 and both are V1.2a though).

Ah, yes. After doing a little bit more research on HDMI, I stand corrected. v1.2a should be able to pass SACD and DVD-A. Good to know.

That said, based on my quick flipping through the PDF from the website, in several locations it says, to listen to SACD and DVD-A one must use the analog outs. Perhaps a firmware update has resolved the issue and enabled bitstreaming those formats on HDMI, while the manual is outdated.

Any feedback for the OP? Being an Oppo owner puts you at a significant advantage when compared to me :).

The Oppo has been able to pass SACD from day 1 AFAIK. DVD-A was not available initially (prerelease), once they got the approval, a firmware update enabled it and it was also available via HDMI as well. The manual was most likely writen early on. I don't have an HDMI receiver, so I can't try it, but it should work.

OP, just make sure in your setup that your fronts are set to large in the speaker setup and you should receive the full range stereo signal over analog. The BM and setup features don't apply to HDMI, only analog, as John stated.
