On-wall speaker recommendations with budget of $500 to $800 per speaker

Can anyone give some recommendations to assist with on-wall speaker choice? We are building a house and cannot decide on which on-wall speakers to use for our main room and want the speakers that will provide the fullest sound possible while using these newer thin speakers that hopefully sound as good as they look hanging on the wall beside the tv. Our budget is anywhere from $500 to $800 per front, left, and center speakers (trying not spend more than $2500 for all 3). The rooms is an open concept room that is 17 (width) X 16 (depth) with the kitchen behind the listening area and a wall to the left of the listening area and sliding glass doors to the right of the listening area.

The speakers will surround a 65" tv and will be complemented by in-ceiling rear speakers by Def Tech (UIW RCS II). A Polk DSW sub will also be used with the setup. The receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR608 but can be upgraded.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Can they mount below the TV? Jamo makes two speakers that are some of the best values on the market (on-wall or not). These look best mounted below your flat screen, but are serious performers.

The THX Select D500 LCR ($349 ea.) Jamo : Home Cinema Systems : D500

The THX Ultra2 D600 LCR ($599 ea.) Jamo : Home Cinema Systems : D600

Aesthetically I prefer the smaller, sleeker D500. It should be fine in your room. I've used them in really large spaces before with great results.

The D600 is going to be the better performer. Either way, you will have a killer system. If a company like M&K made the D500 it would be $1000. Research these speakers and the models before them. These are essentially the updated versions of Jamo's European Theater System of the year. Incredible value for the money.

I know these Jamo THX Ultra2 speakers cost less than Klipsch KL65-THX Ultra2, but how would you compare them?

I would like to see S&V/HTM & AH measure and review the Jamo D600 (to compare to the Klipsch KL65-THX). :D

I don't know if they really are comparable. Here's why: Their applications are really different. Sure, they both play sound (they are speakers after all), but I picture the room they would go into to be completely different.

1st: They do NOT share any technical features or parts even through Klipsch now owns both companies. Jamo and Klipsch engineered their THX systems separately.

- The Jamo is way way way better for a family room or space that isn't "dedicated" to theater or audio or spaces where the speakers are exposed and aesthetics are a concern. No normal thinking person would look at the Klipsch vs. the Jamo and think other wise. The Klipsch are better off in cabinetry, behind a screen, or in an area where nobody cares (or likes the industrial look). I have done the Jamo D500 behind a screen and the results were excellent. This was in a HUGE room, BTW.

The Klipsch can't really wall mount or look good around a flat panel. Period. So, to get a high performance at a high output like what the Jamo D600 gives, for example, is really pretty neat for a $600 speaker. the D500 at $349 is a crazy deal, IMO. Maybe the best deal on a "theater" grade speaker I can think of. It's THAT good and THAT cheap for what you get.

PLEASE NOTE: The D600 is kind of a matte grey finish while the D500 is gloss black with rounded corners. I wish they would do the D600 in the same look and finish as the D500. The D500 is BY FAR the prettier of the two.

- Sound is presented differently as well. The Jamo being a traditional cone & dome while the Klipsch is a horn load. the Jamo can be driven with a beefier receiver and still get "best" results. The Klipsch is going to benefit from spending some $$ on power.

- If I had a dedicated room with a projection system and cost was no object, I would probably look at the Klipsch before the Jamo given just those two options. However, I have used and seen them used in both types. Years ago a competitor did a home show and I really thought their dedicated theater was excellent. He had the last iteration of the Jamo THX Ultra2 that the D600 replaced hanging in a false wall behind an AT screen and acoustic panels. For the money invested I thought it was unbelievable. We used to be direct with Jamo but now it's really just sold through distribution. I'll spec it in from time to time when the design calls for it. All factors considered I have absolutely 0 bad words to say about the D500 or D600.

- If I had a flat panel (large or small) that I wanted to design a system around, I would choose the Jamo over the Klipsch. Dynamically it's an excellent performer. it presents a very solid image. And it can play LOUD without distorting in a family room or even a larger open area.

- If I were going to also lean towards critically listening to a lot of 2 channel stuff and, again, only had these two to choose from I would consider it a push. However, it might be nice to note that the Jamo is a 3-way closed system vs. the Klipsch 2-way slot porting. They definitely sound different!

- One thing that people have brought up as a concern is the mounting height of the Jamos. They are DESIGNED to be mounted below the screen. not on the floor, mind you, but below the screen. the manual shows this. It's fine in that regard.

- Last fun fact is that the Jamo D600 has much smaller dimensions than the Klipsch KL-65 and weights 11lbs less (28lbs to 39). For such a small box it's an extremely well built, well engineered speaker.

Anyway, I hope that this goes to show that the speakers are going to present sound differently and are really meant for different applications!

They really cannot be mounted below the TV or near the floor as we are trying to keep everything as high as possible due to a kid being on the way and don't want any little fingers going through the speakers.

Do you have any other reliable options or what are your thoughts on the:

1) Def Tech Mythos XTR-60 (for left, right, center) or XTR-50?
2) Monitor Audio Shadow 60 (for left, right, center)?
3) Paradigm Millenia LP (for left, right, center)?

Or are all of these just overpriced/overhyped junk?

If that's the case I would look at the following as well....

Tannoy Arena Highline Tannoy - Residential - Summary

LEON Horizon Soundbar or on-walls: Leon Speakers :: Custom Built High-fidelity Home Theater Speakers

Canton CD 250.2 CD 250.2 - CD Series - CANTON German loudspeaker tradition (en)

- Honestly, I think that the LEON Horizon series is a spectacular speaker line that can be custom matched, mounted, and fit to your display. This would provide a seamless look from a high performance product. They also make on-walls that can fit your budget as well. If it were me, I would look at the Horizon model
Hz414-LCR-X-A. With a reasonable discount, this speaker with a bracket for mounting can fit within the top portion of your budget.

- The Tannoy Arena 500 line is really good, but dated and quite thick for an on-wall in 2014 at nearly 5" the 300 is around 4".

- Canton makes a stunning product as well. I think of it as the German version of B&W only, unlike B&W they refuse to compromise anywhere in their line up. The CD 250.2 is still going to be a little big off the wall at 3.9" deep, but sounds excellent, is lower priced than the LEON, and provides a different look. They can play plenty loud and provide a really solid sound.

- The best aesthetics and the best performance is going to come from the LEON.

Has anyone heard the Totem Tribe III for LRC?
Haven't heard this exact model, but the Tribe speakers I've heard are very good. I personally prefer something with a hotter top end, but that's my taste.

Any recommendations? And the price can go higher than the previous mentioned $500-$800/per. I have been getting so many other options and at this point am highly confused and do not know which to choose from. Do any of these make sense: KEF T301 and T301c, Revel M10 and C10, Def Tech Mythos XTR-50 OR XTR-60, Monitor Audio Shadow 60, Paradigm Millenia LP, or any others superior to the ones listed?

I responded to your inquiry on AVS as well and will paste my reply below.....

"I have strong experience with Totem Tribe III & V. They are very pretty, beautiful sounding speakers.

The recommendation for James is also a solid one that I can vouch for. The only negative to them is that they are quite wide compared to the Totems.

I don't feel like Totem's claim of 40hz on the Tribe III is a realistically attainable one in the real world. James spec should be spot on given the company's no-nonsense approach to design and engineering. That doesn't mean I wouldn't consider Totem. I just wouldn't purchase based on spec on their models. They also swallow an absolute ton of power. The James models around the same price points of the Totem and are going to come in a little cheaper while offering equal build quality and larger driver compliment. They are also much more efficient.
"

I didn't recommend either brand before because of your budget. The James 66UE/OW is a wonderful speaker for family rooms as is the Tribe III. The larger, more expensive, higher performing 68UE/OW and Tribe V are considerably more $$$ and quite large as they are better suited along 65" TVs and up.
