On Screen Display Missing

I have a Yamaha RXV-650 AV receiver purchased in January of 2005. This was hooked up to a regular TV using S-Video. I recently bought a Panasonic 50" Plasma and hooked it up with component video. Everything works fine except that OSD is now gone and the OSD setting button doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Depending on the age/model of the receiver it may not output the menu via component. I had a top of the line Sony from a few years back that would only output the menu through S-video and composite video. Look through your owners manual to find out for sure, it should be in there, maybe in really tiny print though.

Brandst is completely right. Many receivers will only show the OSD via composite or s-video. It's a pain but it was a problem almost all receivers I'd seen had until about 2 years ago.

Hook up BOTH component AND S-Video?

I edited my post to show the amp is a Yamaha RX-V650 purchased in January 2005. I find nothing in the manual about not outputting OSD to component.

I am about to display my ignorance. Can I hook up BOTH the component video and S-video outputs to my TV and use (switch the TV to) the S-Video only when setting up the system?

Thanks

You should be able to, as long as you switch the input in the manner you stated. There was no noting of the problem you are experiencing in the manual for my old receiver either. There is a section letting me know that my new receiver does do this in its' manual. It was an actual selling feature.

By the way I don't think either of your questions are based out of ignorance on the topics, it seems you've got the bases really well covered. The exact same topic drove my room mate nuts for hours before he actually asked me about it. (he is using my old receiver) You're not the first to ask those questions, you won't be the last.

It worked!

Hoioked up S-Video in addition to componet. When I switch TV to S-Video, guess what - OSD comes back!! Add a command to my Harmony and I'm ready for the October arrival of my SVS sub.

Thanks guys.

Yamaha Replies

Here is the response to an inquiry I sent Yamaha (before I asked here):

"In response to your email: Make sure that you are using the Monitor Out connection to connect your receiver to the tv. Make sure that you select the right input on your tv. If you are using component video monitor out to connect your receiver to your tv, the On Screen Display (OSD) video signal is outputted at a 480i video signal. Therefore, if you tv is not setup to input a 480i signal or if the video image (from dvd player, cable box, satellite box, etc*) is being output at a higher resolution than 480i than it will not work because the 480i OSD signal will not overlay over the video image. Try setting up your tv to receiver a 480i signal by going into the tv set menu. Or you may want to use either a RCA (Yellow Cable) or S-Video cable monitor out and connect that to any available video input on the back of your tv. Then press the "AMP" button then the "On Screen" button on your remote control to display the OSD. Thank you!"
