Hello guys, while waiting for all of my HT equipments to arrive, I currently have an Oppo DVD player (OPDV917H), a pair of B&W mini speakers and a JVC receiver (RX-D702). However, I simply hook up the speakers to my receiver and use hdmi to dvi cable from receiver to dvd player. I thought I could at least get some sound off what I currently have by putting in some musical cds. But, there is nothing happening ! I am sorta stunned, can someone tell me what's wrong?

Ps. I check and recheck the system setup for dvd player and reciver, still nothing.

you have no sound cable, correct me wrong but dvi does not carry sound only hdmi so in the conversion you lose the sound, get a digital sound cable either coax or optical

well... I unplug hdmi-dvi cable and plug-in a set of component cable. I got the sound. I suppose this whole digital thing is really confusing but I would really like it to work after all that money spent :p

Component Video carries video only as well. You must also have audio cables from the dvd player to the receiver, otherwise you wouldn't get sound there either.

It's probably a setting in the dvd player causing the problem. DVI carries video only so when you go from HDMI to DVI, you lose the audio (the player is sending both over the HDMI cable). You will have to set the player to output audio over something other than hdmi.

this is true but depending on the dvd player, some will let output sound through the hdmi and the and output without any aetting in the dvd player, but im almost sure your dvd player has either digital coax or optical out, find out which one it has and go pick up the cable that will be your best sound. Just make sure the reciever or whatever your inputting to has a digital sound in. And im guessing along with the component cables you hooked up the rca red and white as well
