OLED @ Pentagon City Sony Style Store - Virginia

I decided to swing into the Sony Style store next to the Pentagon after work today to just see if they had anything nifty to check out, and sure enough, there was their ridiculously expensive OLED 11" display.

In the simplest of terms: It is the best looking display I have seen... ever.

They were running a PS3 with Cars into it via HDMI, which didn't hurt things at all, but the level of detail was just astounding, and the contrast and colors were beyond anything that I have ever seen before.

Forget the trick factor of the 3mm thick screen... and it was definitely trick.

At the beginning of the movie, where Lightning is sitting in the truck and is psyching himself up for the race - the screen goes to black, and then race cars zoom by... then back to black.

"I am speed..."

The black wasn't kind of black - it was truly the first black I have seen from a display in years. The display could have been off as far as I could tell.

Combine that with a perfect viewing angle. Nothing at all like LCD which is better than before, but still isn't close to 180 degrees flawless. This just looked perfect from every side... and up and down.

Nothing was bleeding over with colors, nothing was washed out, or overly dark. When there was supposed to be shadows... they were there. And when things were supposed to be bright, things were bright. But, never more than they should be. Perhaps the colors were a bit amped, but more in a pleasant way since they didn't bleed at all.

The ability to handle motion was also spot on. The opening racing sequence showed no streaking or blurring at all at any point. It simply flowed as it should.

Of course, at 11" ... at $2500... it's not something that's high on most people's 'must buy' list, but as a showpiece to highlight what this technology means? It simply takes television to another level. All they need now is the 40" plus model.

Oh, and I did a fair bit of viewing from about 12-16" from the screen to give it more accurate viewing distance.

Astounding it is.

Any 11" display should look astounding with a hi-def source fed into it. The pixels are cropped together so small it will always look good. An 11" CRT with a hi-def signal would look unbelievable. I would not pass anyjudgment until I see it working in a large display.

Did they ever get the lifespan up on the blue Oled??

Agreed. 11" is pretty small...most things will look wickedly sharp and clean...especially animation!!

Let's have a look at a 50" panel beside a Pioneer Elite PRO-110 for starters.

Forget sharp - that one is all about resolution.

It is the 3D effect that comes with a perfect image. Blacks which are black and colors which are flawless. I've never seen an LCD touch this, and since the goal IS CRT performance levels, I would say that they have basically been reached with this display. Ever actually look at any LCD displays? There isn't one, at any size, that can touch this.

For plasma, I own a Kuro, and I can tell you that the black of this display is far moreso than the Kuro. Definitely not knocking my own display, because it is the best available at that size basically. But, when OLED jumps up to the 32"+ range, things will really take off if price gets a bit more in line.

Also - Understand that I was viewing from about a foot away - looking for flaws.

That's the equivalent of standing about 5 feet from a 60" plasma. So, sharp isn't a gimme.
