Old Speakers From the attic

I have some relatively old floor speakers (circa 1986) that have spent a lot of time in my parents attic and my sisters boyfriends garage. I live in a pretty humid climate (VA). What do you think the chances are that these speakers actually still sound alright ? I'd have to drive way out into the country to get them.

Thanks,
e

Well, with no data at all, No one knows. Unless they were extremely expensive in 1986, its not worth it to go get them IMO. Besides, they are probly those short box style speakers that don't really sound that great in modern seats, just sit to low for me.

Fire them up and see. That's the only way to know for sure. If the grilles come off, inspect for rotted driver surrounds (the edge of the speaker where it is attached to it's frame). Chances are good that the surrounds are bad, but if not, they should be OK. If they are bad, you can get repair kits cheap for most normal size drivers. If the speakers sit too low - get or make stands.

It really depends on the speakers as to whether they will actually sound good. :)

I have a pair of MTX like that. I have 12 inch stands that aim up at the listener. It seems to help the low stance problem. I agree that the taller ones of today are better.

I would take a drive. You may be passing up some pristine Klipsch heresys or advents. They are CERTAINLY worth it for free.
