Old receiver work with new surround sound?

I have a 10 year old surround sound Technics SA-GX670 receiver. It says Dolby Surround, Pro Logic on the front. It has two audio inputs on the rear.

Will this work with the new HDTV broadcast signals and with new DVDs to give surround sound? In any case, would it be worth getting a new receiver?

I have a new Pana TH-50PX600U HDTV and S97 DVD player.

Thanks,

Dave

Unless it has digital inputs, the best that receiver will ever be able to do is what it does now with Dolby Pro Logic.

You're better off replacing it with a new one. The advances are tremendous and the prices for decent have dropped considerably.

I think you're right.

I'm headed for a Pana SA-XR57S. They're going for $280 at Amazon. That way, I'll be able to stay with all Pana equipment. Who knows, maybe there's some sort of advantage with the hookups and the remotes.

Thanks,

Dave

It won't work very well. You can use the stereo inputs and get DPL sound but since those old receivers only really had 4 channels (left, center and right front and one channel for both rear speakers) you won't be able to use the discrete 5.1 channel sound that you can get now. Pretty much any 5.1 you replace it with will be better now. You can find those for as little as $200.
