Ok, so here's the 64 cent question...

...on or about Dec. 31, 2006 analog teevee will be a thing of the past as digital takes over(or so it seems)...this will render current teevees or ANYTHING with a tuner(VCRs, DVD recorders, etc.) obsolete...I fully realize there are outboard converters which is all well and good for real-time viewing on your CRT or LCD, but...

Anyone know if there are any such off-air RECORDING devices that will make the transition and not be relegated to the dung-heap of technology?

I look at it like this and maybe so do many others that have a fetish for things technical like prepros, DVD player/recorders etc.... and that is:

Why do you build things or start new projects around the house? Is it because you actually need the end result or because the new project will allow you to justify the accumulation of more tools/toys/gear/etc...?

You still have three more years left...

...to worry about this. At work I receive political updates of legislation that effects the profits of companies. The latest is congress is considering a bill (it's called the reconcilliation bill) to help reduce the budget deficit and it states that analog transmissions will be cut off on 12/31/08. The auction of the bandwidth on which analog transmissions is supposed to happen sometime in 2007 and is expected to bring in several billion dollars into the government bank account. My analysis states there's a high probability of this legislation passing.

But to answer your original question I don't know why the converter won't work with an existing TiVo or DVR, if the signal is converted to analog you should have no problem recording it. All of your recording is currently done in real time so it should not be an issue.

Everything I've read...

...points to the 2006 date, however 2008 would make today's purchase a bit easier to reconcile...

I mean to say "real time" vs "time shifting"...shows are recorded on different channels, at different times, overnight and unattended...I don't subscribe to cable, Tivo, Directv, etc. so a box/decoder doesn't exist and from the info I have gleaned there seems to be some issue with recording via antennae outputs and the old channel 3/4 setup and without stereo...of course there are other wiring schemes available but it's all just another PITA, planned-obsolescence fiasco as far as I'm concerned...BTW, thanx for the response...
