Ok I suppose its finished....for now :)

Finally after much work and pain, I think my setup is complete! I'm very happy with the sound thus far, I was a little worried with the surround placement (they put the speakers a little higher than I asked, they are about two feet above seated ear level) but it seems to have worked out FINE.

Here what I've got

TV: HITACHI 50VS810 50 Inch LCD Rear Projection
Reciever: Pioneer VSX-72TXV

DVD/CD/DVD-A Player : Panasonic DVD-S97 (really happy with this unit. Only have one HDMI cable coming out of the back of it and it supports everything and sounds and looks terrific!)

Mains: Boston Acoustics VR1s
Center: Boston Acoustics VRC
Sub: Boston Acoustics PV700
Surrounds: Boston Acoustics VRX

I was never a boston fan until I went into my local HiFi store and brought some CDs and listened. I really like them now and I got a pretty darn good price on them!

Comcast Motorola Digital Cable HD/DVR box (actually pretty good, no HDMI though. Ive been bugging them for their new HDMI cable box but aparently its got the same issue as all the others with the copy protection :()

And obviously I had to get a Berkaline Recliner :p

The only other thing I'm thinking about getting its a dedicated CD/DVD player, like that new 400 disc Sony DVD-A/SACD player. But I dont really mind swapped CDs one at a time and I have a hard time convincing myself I need to when the Pani sounds so good!

pics are attached please feel free to offer advice and tips, as this is my first home theater!

Nice. Sweeeet receiver. Looks HUGE, HEAVY, and POWERFUL.

How about some twist ties until you can get some better cable ties to help hide the wires? Run then down one side of the AV rack.

When you get time, how about a nice new paint color - such as taupe or maroon? That would really make that system pop. Darker colors do. I'd also recommend a nice print over the electrical box.

You have a really nice set-up there! I really like the sound of Boston speakers as well! I would have to agree with Buckeye that something needs to be done with the cables. It won't take long and it really improves the look of your installation.

Just thought of something else. Swap the positioning of the Elite with the dvd player. You'll lose a lot of visible cables being down lower, and I think the Pioneer will look nicer in that space. The dvd player has a much lower profile, and may look better on the top shelf. Try it and see.

I was thinking about swapping the dvd player as well, but there wont be much more than a few inches of clearance for the receiver. Will that be enough ventilation?

The reciever is heavy and powerful. It really drives the crap out of my speakers. Very VERY clear sound even at high volumes.

Cable managment is high on the priority list for sure. I was kinda exicted to get it set up :)

The only question I have for you vets is I have the cable box running component and digital coax for audio. Is there any advantage to switching to optical out for the audio?

If you don't have much clearance between the top of the Elite and the top shelf, keep it the way it is. I didn't realize it was THAT tall. Geezus. It's a monster.

There is no advantage of optical over coax. You are doing fine.

A few inches, meaning 2 to 3 inches. That will be fine.
It is an open rack, so the sides, front, and back will be wide open for ventilation.
I am positive it will be fine, as long as you can put the reciever in there and still (just) fit your hand on top of it, you should be fine.:)
Looks good by the way, I to agree cable management is your next step.;)

One thing to note. Its better to have the weight on the bottom of the rack. Adds stability.

Great setup!

I like it, cant wait to get closer to happy with my setup.
I know what you mean by the cabels and being in a hurry to hook it all up....I am so guilty of this. Then I reason with myself and say well I'll make it look nice once I hear it and watch a few movies....then it's like ok after one more movie....and another...well I am going to get to it one day I promise!
That reciever is sweet. I love pioneer stuff allways have. I am now considering it as one of my options for upgrade. Anyway sweet setup and I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of it.

Yea, no kidding!!! I'd put that mutha' on the bottom shelf so if the sheer weight of it causes it to fall through the glass, it wont crush the rest of the components!! Having the heavy stuff at the bottom doesnt hurt for stability either.

:D :D

Nice setup!!

It looks like you have a fairly bright room in there. Have you considered acoustical panels to treat those pesky room acoustics? A few panels will go a long way towards improving your sound.
