Ok I pulled the trigger now what?!

Ok I just got a deal too good to pass up and I now will be getting a Mitsubishi HC5500 projector. I was debating between the Epson 6500UB but the Mitsu after rebates will be almost $1000 less and I get an extra bulb.

I have a tab-tension 84" electric screen but I still need a mount for the projector.

The mount will be attached up through my drop ceiling so I will probably put a small piece of plywood between the joints to give a solid surface. I already prewired my HDMI cable and outlet.

I have read over at AVS that the standard monoprice mount does not work well so I'm looking for other recommendations.

1) Are there tricks to know how far of a drop I need on this mount come down?

2) The projector has the lens to one side so do I mount it so the lens is in the center of the screen or will the lens shift cover this without distortion?

3) I'm a little concerned about getting my screen mounted straight as well. I don't think the wall that is behind it is perfectly straight so anyone have tricks for that? It will drop in front of my wall mounted LCD so I can have both.

Thanks for any help. I'm just a little psyched.:D:D

I love how you guys justify your new toys: "...a deal too good to pass up...." :p

I believe the higher the gain the screen is, the better it is to have a smaller angle of incidence, in order to take advantage of gain properties and minimize hotspotting. Otherwise, I don't think it's a big deal.

Center is better, but I doubt it will make a huge difference.

This part confuses me. Since two points (mounting points) make a line/ray, you have an even plane to mount from. Right? If you mean that the ceiling is not perfectly flat, well, you will have to decide if you want the screen to be symmetrical to the wall itself, or not. I'm sure that any uneveness (if I'm understanding correctly that is) will be pretty subtle. If you have very good light control, or dark front wall, I'm not even sure it matters a whole lot. I suppose if you put a gun to my head, I'd mount the screen symmetrically to the wall, and then adjust the mount's pitch/yaw/roll to make it work.

The Chief RPA-U is what I bought after some research, having started my own thread here. $159 at PP. I also bought the matching mounting plate ($20) as well as the pipe ($60). Now, you can pocket $50 by getting a pipe of any certain length at the hardware store, but I like that the pipe is adjustable with 6" play. (Must choose something like 6"-12", or 12"-18", etc, IIRC). And besides, it looks good, and matches in finish.

The mount is excellent because the way the arm/mounts work, it's future proof, no matter if you have lens on one side, or centered. Roll, pitch, yaw are all adjustable. Directions aren't incredibly clear, but it becomes more clear after some screwing/unscrewing and experimentation. The one thing I need to tell you is that the pipe goes into a CERTAIN side of the mounting plate (didn't know, and slightly stripped my pipe). Whatever, it's in, and it ain't going nowhere.

And you know what they say, "If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.":D

I should be banned. I was thinking that he could have just not bought it.

I'm cheap, though. (I'm also inexpensive - tell all your lady friends who are looking for a bargain-priced gigolo. :))

Just don't rush the installation.

You need to read the manual in hand or prep by reading on line what the limits are for the projector.

Some like to be at the top of the screen or a bit lower and on center line. The closer you can get it in center the less keystoning and distortion, even if the projector can adjust.

Are you saying that the screen wall is not perpendicular to the side walls?
Do you know how to use geometry to draw a perpendicular line that bisects the base, in this case the screen? Then you can have the lens at that point. A few inches should not be critical but try precision.

Have you though of a lift so the projector is above the dropped ceiling when not in use? Yes, it is not cheap but, the installation may be more acceptable to spouses?

Don't mount the screen too high, hard on the neck.

I've checked this out better now and I don't think it is an issue. What I was trying to say was that I did not think my front wall was 90degrees to the side walls.

I will check this one out and the one majorloser has. He PM'd me the details (thanks major) and I like that one and check out the Chief.

I have read the manual once and once it is hear and I get the screen mounted I will have a better idea what my drop is and such. I cannot recess like you are suggesting because I don't have enough space.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far.

I broke it to the wife that I have bought it and she took it quite well. Of course she was a little tipsy on wine so I guess you just need to pick the right time to fess up.:)

You could recess partially?

If she like movies, I am sure once this is up, she will like it and approve it:D
Nothing like it:D
