One Blu-ray to rule them all
Posted on May 27th, 2008 at 20:20 EDT

It should come as no surprise that The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be making its way to Blu-ray, the victor of the format war, yet the announcement still sends scintillating shivers down my spine. Peter Jackson, director of the trilogy, recently revealed the existence of the LOTR Blu-ray when discussing the upcoming Hobbit film.

"We are working on a Blu-ray version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won't be this year."

So there you have it, official confirmation from the horse's mouth. We'll keep you posted on when you'll be able to acquire the one Blu-ray to rule them all.

As long as they don't pull the same crap where there is two different version.

Just come out with the extended version from the beginning. I already wasted money on all three extended versions in DVD.

I should sell my three extended editions before blu-ray gets too "main stream", and put the money into the blu-ray versions.

Just one version, to be watched by all.

Well, the best part will be all those multi disc sets each on one disc :) I'm guessing they will release the EE versions and not the theatrical ones. I don't see why they wouldn't, and in fact they could include another disc with the theatrical with it like they did with Blade Runner and Close Encounters.

C'mon, was it really wasted? How many times have you watched it? I'll be watching it for the 6th time sometime this summer.

Amen to that!!! I've already told my wife (a huge LOTR fan) that on the next rainy Saturday we're going to have an EE LOTR marathon. She's cool as long as there's popcorn. :D

Haven't done a marathon of the series in a long time...because the EEs are so darn long. Last time it took 4 days :)

I don't see why they don't release the EE version with the theatrical version on the same disc. I forget the technical term, I think it's called 'branching,' some one correct me if I'm wrong. Thats where the disc just doesn't play the scenes from the EE if the theatrical is released. I have a few other discs like that and I can't tell where the cuts are when it plays.

Why not?

I guess some of these directors are just not as enthusiastic about blu-ray as some of us consumers are.:D

Unfortunately I only have a 5-disc changer. I still have to get up for that last disc.

Grab the snack, drinks and Depends. It's gonna a be a long day with no stops.

Well I got rid of the changer and now solely use the PS3 in the living room. I may have to get the extra upscaling DVD player out of the bedroom so I can always have the next disc cued up to go :p.

if someone created "pink-ray" with ONLY the LOTR series available as their movie ... i'd still buy the player and those three movies :)

I read that the LOTR will not be releaseed until 2011 on Blu-ray. It was supposed to coincide with the Hobbit release

Also dont be surprised if they release the standard theatrical version first and then release the extend cuts a few months later on blu-ray. An all to familiar pattern with many DVD's
