which would you guys select.

I am new to this forum and need some help. My knowledge is zero and I am buying these for my wife [small 10*16 ft room] as connected to either a Yamaha/Denon/Marantz amp [again I will post for some help here too].

Not planning a sub and this is mainly for rock music.

Kef iQ1
Polk Audio Monitor 40
Polk Audio rti 4
Bose 301

Would appreciatte any help.

Thanks

For a room that small, I would suggest a pair of Klipsch RB-51s. I myself love rock music as well. I just auditioned these Klipsch bookself speakers this past weekend and fell in love with them. See my review on this forum here:

You should definitely try to audition these speakers yourself. If you go to Klipsch.com, and click 'find a dealer,' you can enter your zip code and find the closest dealer. Call them up and ask if they have anything in the Klipsch Reference Bookshelf line that you can audition. The RB-51s produce a great sound and leave a very small, stylish footprint, so WAF (wife acceptance factor) is pretty high. See how you like them for yourself.

Also, I would remove Bose from the list. Most people on this forum, myself included, believe Bose to be better at marketing than creating speakers. In other words, they're a ripoff.

The best advice anyone can give you, no matter what suggestions you might receive, is to go out and listen to your options youself. Whatever sounds best to you and your wife, buy. Regardless of what anyone else says.

Hello welcome to the forum. Just noticed your post and thought I would add my .02. I have heard all of those listed except the KEF. Of the others the Polk Rti4 is better imho. However, you would be better served by going to the Axiom website and checking out the M3Ti which cost $320 shipped. You can go via the outlet and get 10% off which would cost $288 shipped. I have heard these and they really sound great w/o a powered sub. I ,like you, listen to rock. Anyways, if you like the Polks be sure to look at the Rti6--it is better than the Rti4 and has a bigger soundstage. Hope this helps. Happy hunting!!!!!

Of those, go with the RTi4's. I auditioned both the Polk RTi6 and RTi4's and I much preferred the sound of the 4's. They didn't have the muddy bass I heard in the 6's. The 4's are excellent sounding bookshelves. My advice is to listen to them side by side and see which you prefer.

I've not auditioned Axiom's, but Klipsh are a bit sibilant in the Synergy series. The Reference series are a bit more tame. Axiom uses a metal tweeter, and thus may be more sibilant than a higher end soft dome. Metal tweeters are very good for rock music, and are better at handling higher spl's. Axiom has a great return policy, so if she dislikes the sound, she can send them back - no questions asked.

You do realize that bookshelf speakers withouit a sub means missing the entire low end of the bass range.

Good point BUT with my Paradigm Reference Studio 20 v.3
I do not feel as though I am missing out on much with respect to music. However, when watching dvd I definately use my Mirage S12 12" powered sub to get the LFE. I must say though on occasion I do use my sub when listening to 2-channel music and the Mirage has really surprised me on how well it performs--very punchy, tight, and articulate.
