Odd issue between Roku Ultra and Denon 4311.

We have had our Roku Ultra connected to our Panny Plasma TV in the den and Denon for about 4 months with no issues. The wife uses the Roku Ultra with its connected headphone buds to watch TV after I've gone to bed, which cuts the sound off from the main speakers.. Connections are HDMI from the Denon to the Ultra and the Denon to the TV. As you use the Ultra headphones the sound is cancelled to the main HT speakers. Wed morning I got up to watch some golf, and I had No sound at all from the main speakers, and I even tried the headphone jack on the Denon, NO sound. But I did have sound on the Ultra headphones. Weird. Even after Ultra resets nothing worked, I was not even getting sound from my OPPO ( BD) ., So I started my disconnecting power from all devices and unplugging HDMI cables and doing a full reset of the Denon. Put everything back in and zip, nada. I figured I had a corrupt HDMI circuitry so I started looking into a new AVR. So I disconnected everything and pulled the AVR out of the rack. BUT ! after I slept on it the next morning I thought, this AVR can't be blown. I've had this Denon since it came out in 2010. So I placed the AVR on the floor and ran a HDMI cable from my OPPO to the Denon, Added my two front speakers, added power cords and turned both units on. Added added a TOTO CD and "bingo Music  and a little odd as it didn't work the other morning.

Well, so I added my center and surround speakers, music , awesome. So added the Ultra, cat 6 cable to my router and HDMI to the TV, added power to all devices and pulled up a Roku/Hulu channel and bingo sound.

The only issue I have now is I can't control the system sound from the Roku remote anymore after the Denon reset ( but the Roku remote does control the sound from the TV if the Denon is turned off.

I have No clue what caused the main issue. I feel it was some odd HDMI handshake issues between the TV, Roku Ultra and the Denon while the Roku Ultra headphones is used as it cuts out the sound from the main system. Another thing I think could have had an effect. When the Roku turns everything off ( TV ) the Denon is still on. So that could have an effect. Odd for sure.

I wanted to update this, I should have a long time ago. The issues turned out to be handshake issues between the Denon and the Roku Ultra and the HDMI connections when the Ultra's earphones are used. Odd yes. But unplugging all the HDMI cables for a few minutes and turning off the Ultra and the TV and the Denon and connecting them all back up, cleared the problem. ,

Any time something changes WRT one device using HDMI, unplug it. When you unplugged all of the devices, you lost any certainty about where the problem was, but it's done, so you should be OK.

Well that was my first run at it, unplugging the HDMI from the ROKU to the Denon, which did not fix the problem at all. So it was all HDMI cables, TV<, ROKU AND DENON and let it set, and back in, problem solved. Just freaking weird that when the wife uses the Roku Ultra Headphones, some times the Audio is totally cancelled, even with teh Roku out of the picture. Although Audio did work with my CD player vis the Denon and its HDMI. But interesting how an unplug of the HDMI cables corrects that. Some weird handshake between the Roku and the Denon when that Roku Headphone is used.

Unfortunately hdmi has plenty of issues, and few bother with any certification/thorough testing, but at least you know how to solve the issue after using headphones now....sometimes just turning on/off the tv has done it for me with handshake issues, sometimes the avr....somewhat depends on the combo of gear.
