I’m in the process of building a dedicated HT/listeningroom. The room is long and narrow (3.15:1 ratio) which should make for goodlistening. I know it would make for an excellent 5.2 set-up with full towersall the way around (except for the center of course) which is what I’ve plannedfor. But now I’d like to go to a 7.2 set-up. The problem is I don’t have room for towers atthe left and right surround locations (not talking about the left and rightback locations). I would have to use satellite style speakers hung on the sidewalls. So my question is, “How is this going to sound having satellites at thesurround positions and full towers at the back positions? Would I be better offgoing with the planned 5.2 system?

I personally use identical bookshelf speakers all around (including front center), as I use a subwoofers for the deep bass anyway. I recommend that most others do the same. That way, for the same price as towers, one can go with speakers from a higher line. And they also will all be perfectly voice matched that way.

Now, most people mix and match bookshelf and tower speakers, along with a horizontal center speaker, so most people will not have any problems with you doing as you are thinking of doing. In fact, since we are discussing surround speakers rather than the front three, it matters less there than the fact that you are planning on using a different speaker for the center than for the right and left front channels. If it does not bother you to use a different center channel speaker on the front, it ought not bother you to use different speakers for surround use.

As for 5.2 versus 7.2, how much that matters is something upon which there is little agreement. I went from a 6.1 system to a 5.2 system now, as extra rear speakers matter little to me. But this is partly a matter of placement (and as you know from your case, not everyone has the same options due to space), as well as personal preference, and so you must decide for yourself on this point as well. Of course, for the same money, one can get better speakers for a 5.2 system than for a 7.2 system (because with the same price, there is more money per speaker that way), so that may enter into the issue as well, unless you have unlimited funds.

You bring up some good points Pyrrho, especially for people who know that they’ll be upgrading down the road. For me personally, all of the speakers that I need I already have and I’ll have some left over even if I go the 7 channel route. All of them are good middle of the road speakers and I’m sure I won’t be upgrading (unless I win the lottery). They are all built by the same manufacturer and of the same basic model-line so there aren’t any serious timbre issues.

“If it does not bother you to use a different center channel speaker on the front, it ought not bother you to use different speakers for surround use.” I hadn’t thought of it quite that way before, but that’s a valid point.

If you already have all of the gear, you should try it both ways and judge from your experience. No one else has heard those speakers in your room, and no one else has your exact preferences and tastes.
