I have noticed that every now and then I get a single 'popping' sound through the speakers and it doesn't seem to matter if I am watching a DVD or live TV.
The connections all seem tight and the wires all are BJC ones so are good quality.
Any suggestions how I might track down the cause?
TV is a Olevia 32" being fed with a HDMI cable from the Yamaha which converts to a DVI/HTPC cable at the TV (the Olevia is an older non-HDMI model). FIOS signal comes in through dual card Tivo HD and DVD's are played on Onkyo 971H.
Thanks.
You probably have a repair bill in your future.
You have told us it is not the source, so the problem almost certainly resided in your receiver. Is the pop in all speakers, or just one? If it is one, you have a suspect amp, if on all it most likely in the power supply, but just might be in the processor.
This symptom is a common precursor to failure. Causes are cap breaking down and arcing across the electrolytic. My engineer son who designs semiconductors tells me semiconductors commonly fail, by arcing through the semiconductor and making holes. When enough holes have been punched you have failure.
The problem is that until the popping becomes very frequent, or there is total failure of the component causing the problem, no service tech will find it.
