Greetings from Denmark,

I am currently contemplating the possibility of upgrading my living room audio system. However, as I am very inexperienced in this particular field I feel like I need some assistance.

First of all, I have a budget of what corresponds to around 2.600 US Dollars give or take.

Now as I understand it, I need some speakers (duh) and some sort of amplifier. My main concern lies with the amplifier, but since the speakers will influence your amplifier-advice, I figure that I should start with the speakers.

Speakers: I am not looking for a surround sound system. Two speakers will suffice for me. I visited an audio equipment store the other day to gauge the current speaker market. While I have not made a final decision yet (I still have a few models to listen to on my next visit), it is probably going to be a pair of floor standing speakers as opposed to a pair of bookshelf speakers and a separate subwoofer. I am currently leaning toward a pair of Dali Ikon 6 MK2.

Amplifier: Like I said, this is my main concern. As I understand it, you hook the speakers up to an audio amplifier which is then connected to the device(s) that actually produce the sound that you want your speakers to play (eg. a television, a computer, a phone, a tablet et cetera). Your device(s) then produce an audio signal (eg. a video on Youtube from your phone or the sounds of a movie from your television) which is modified by your amplifier such that your speakers are able to generate the desired sounds.
From the salesman I gathered that there are a lot of different types of amplifiers that each have a lot of different connectivity features - especially in this modern age. I was not able to wrap my head around all of the possibilities that he described to me. Thus, here I am, looking for your assistance.

So if I now describe in detail what I need - or rather, what I would like my audio system to be capable of - I hope that you will be able to tell me what I need to buy in addition to a pair of speakers for this to work.

Basically I want to be able to easily play sounds from all of my different devices on the new speakers. These devices include:

  • My television (has Bluetooth, no WiFi) - I want to use the new speakers instead of my TV's integrated ones
  • My laptop, phone, and tablet (has Bluetooth and WiFi) - I want to use the new speakers when playing sounds from my laptop, phone, and tablet (I mainly play music from my hard disk drives, Spotify or Youtube)

I would also like to be able to play sounds from my desktop PC (has WiFi, but no Bluetooth) although it would not be a deal breaker if this was not possible. Also, I have my Playstation hooked up to my TV using an HDMI cable - I assume the sounds from the Playstation would automatically come out of the new speakers given that the TV would be using the new speakers as previously discussed?

It would not be a major problem if I had to connect my TV to the amplifier using wires since my TV is rather immobile in any case. However, I really wish to be able to connect my laptop, phone, and tablet to the amplifier wirelessly.

I hope you understand what I am getting at. I wish to purchase something that I will be using joyously for many years to come.

Oh also, I am using Android and Windows. No iEquipment here.

Sorry for the somewhat long post and thank you for any assistance!

Many mid level AVRs will do what you want as far as connectivity is concerned, for wi-fi and bluetooth. I would be looking at mid level, say around $1k, Yamaha, Pioneer, or Denon receivers. Dali makes good speakers, and you might as well support the home team. Your speakers will sound great with any of those amplifiers, so don't think they have to somehow 'match' each other, they do not.

So something like the Denon AVR-X3000 would work well? Although I do not think I will need its surround sound capabilities.

The salesman kept recommending the Denon Heos AMP. Seems to me like one of its major selling points (ie. the multi-room capability) is somewhat wasted on me - I do not plan on adding any speakers to other rooms. I also do not like the fact that it does not come with Bluetooth capability. It is also somewhat lacking in the connectivity department in general - but I guess that is the point.

What do you think about this choice? Am I missing something?
