Hi Guys,

First time here posting in the forum. Gonna need some help from you experts.
Mind you I have very little experience but have been just overwhelming myself with information here in the last few weeks.
Here is my current set-up:
Yamaha RX-A2030 receiver
Old school B & W 600 series speakers. LCR & small M-1 Surrounds.
Dual SVS PB-2000.
Now I'm moving into a 15' x 20' room with an opening on one side leading into another area. I know not the best scenario, but that's what I'm working with.
I have a new slate and want to upgrade to Dolby Atmos 5.2.4 set-up.
What are your thoughts on the following:
Marantz SR8012 with an Emotiva XPA Gen5 amp (if needed).
Sticking with my SVS dual PB-2000's.
SVS Prime Pinnacle Towers
SVS Ultra Center & Ultra Surrounds.
Want 4 ceiling speakers, but confused as heck on what to go with.

I was thinking about powering the 5 main channels with the amp and the other 4 ceiling (Atmos) speakers on the receiver alone.

Please give me your thoughts. I take constructive criticism very well. Go easy, like I said I'm a novice.

Thanks!!

Shady recently did a review on the Pinnacle right here and seemed to like them quite a bit.

I'm gonna shock everyone here and say I fully support your decision to go with the SVS Ultra line of speakers. I've had nothing but good experiences with SVS. All my speakers are Ultras and I love them. They're very neutral and clean speakers. Wide soundstage, great imaging and good dynamics.

I saved a good bit watching their outlet and looking for open box and scratch n nick and buying from there. They're pretty well picked over right now tho, due to a labor day sale this weekend... They include photos of any damage so you know what you're getting. The scratches I found on mine (on one I never did find any scratches) were so small as to be pretty much invisible. They're outlet items all have the same warranties and return policy as new so it's really risk free.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the Pinnacles yet (I have Ultra towers),but I've little doubt you'll like them. I started with a pair of Ultra bookshelves and was so impressed I went ahead and got the towers and moved the bookshelves to the back for surround duty. Top notch customer service and one of the most generous return policies in the business too.

If they'll work in your space I recommend 2 bookshelf speakers for surround speakers instead of the Ultra surround speakers. They'll do just as well (maybe even better) and gives you a few more bucks in your pocket. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I can pop in and explain that type of surround speaker, advantages and disadvantages better than I.

Yours Truly, Audioholics' Biggest SVS Fanboy... :p

I like your very common sense approach to this. I was impressed with the review here for the Pinnacles. For the money, could easily become one of the best buy’s in audio! I think the difference with the B&Ws will be viscerally noticeable.
For Center and Surrounds, I like the idea of the Ultras over the Primes... especially Ultra Bookshelves at Surround.
Get your 5.2 system dialed in before adding Atmos. Not meaning to discourage you, but the added complexity will make dialing in your base layer that much more difficult.
Amps are always a touchy subject, but think adding an amp for your front three is ideal. The Surrounds,Rears, and Atmos won’t draw as much power as those. I would spend wisely on a good 3-channel amp that will allow you to meet your SPL goals at your LP.
For 15x20... you might want to be prepared to add a third pb2000. Those dimensions may lend themselves to some tricky room acoustics. A third sub properly set up using a miniDSP 2x4HD and REW will really clean up any potential Bass issues. But DO start off with the two you have. Adjust if needed. ;)
Also: do the subwoofer crawl to find the best places, acoustically, for your subs!
Cheers!

I agree that this is a common sense approach and be a good cost effective system. Just follow the Dolby speaker layout. For ceiling speakers I would use a full ranger. I'm really not keen on these ceiling speakers with tweeter stuck in front of the cones.

Four of these would do the job nicely. They are in sale now for $36 each. Note they really have a good frequency response and even better good dispersion. They are the only descendants of the wonderful JW full range drivers of so long ago. In my view not only the best full ranger ever, but one of the finest drivers ever. I'm going to use 4 JWs in the theater I'm setting up now as I have a quite a few of those, in fact I'm pretty sure most of those drivers that still exist. I would construct small sealed enclosures for them. If you are interested I will model the optimal sealed box for this application.

The JW module.

Ceiling boxes ready to take the JW modules.

In my old place I had the RSL C34e's for my ceiling speakers for the price they are a good buy they sounded very very well. They were actually very good with music and atmos duties were pretty easy to handle for them

For 5.1.4, the RX-A2080 will do. If you like Marantz, the SR7013 or SR6013 will save you money that can better spent on speakers. The SR8012 won't offer better sound quality especially if you are using an ext amp. 2 PB2000 should be fine for a 15x20 ft room.
