Not sure how I feel about Disney buying Marvel

I was a big Marvel collector when I was a kid. Mainly X-men; that is about half of all of my collecting. DC was not so great when I was collecting IMO, but was making a comeback. I also collected some odd stuff from Canada and Japan, but they were hard to get. Anyway, I wonder what this will do to them as a comic line? I know that Disney likely wants them for the movie IP, not so much the comics themselves, but I just hope it doesn't try to influence the content. That would be bad.

I think it could go one of 2 ways. Disney might make better movies out of them. I'm thinking a 3d animated Spiderman might be much better than the live action ones.

Or it could ruin everything. I think they really want them to make cartoons.

I’m thinking Walt is rolling over in his grave – this company is money & power hungry. They own ABC and try to get their mitts on anything they can to make more $.
If the “High School Musical” franchise & other Disney TV shows are any indication of things to come then the comic book movies we’ve all come to enjoy are really going to tank big time.

The other thing that really irks me (I have 10 & 12 year old daughters that watch Disney Channel all the time) is how they pick out these teenage girls, put on makeup & clothing to make them look much older than they are and then pimp them out to the tweenie audiences.

My 2 cents

Well, this could certainly be used to give MGM (er, Hollywood Studios) a MAJOR facelift. And in my humble opinion a much needed lift as well. This would allow them to go head to head with Universal & Paramount in a way they can't right now.

Also, Marvel has way more characters than it can ever turn into movies. I wouldn't be surprised to see Disney start tapping some of the lesser known characters for TV content and straight to DVD while reserving the Marquee names (Xmen, Spidey, Thor, etc) for the movies.

I'm really nervous about this buyout as well. I hope this doesn't affect the movies. Though I did read in an online article this morning that they will continue with all contracts that they are currently in and will let those go through to completion, but after that they want to try to move things in house (which could mean animated 3-D features....).

I'm glad that they are sticking with what they have contracted so far, because Iron Man 2 looks awesome (I saw an exclusive preview at SDCC this year), plus there are so many other's that were rumored and announced coming up that sounded awesome.

I hope this works out for the best, but I just can't see Disney and Marvel together. They just seem so different in their styles.

Was Marvel even suffering financially? There movies have pulled in tons of money, or was this just a get rich quick type of movement (though you would think that the head guys were already filthy rich).

I can see it now –

“Comedy ensues as Wolverine gets goaded into playing the part of chaperone at the school dance, Rogue touches all the boys that dumped her, Storm creates a water spout as someone gives her a swirly & the Xavier Schools Basketball team sing & dance while coping with their powers in”

High School Musical - X

Disney is way bigger than the girls channel.

As far as the MGM comments go. I take offense to that as a Stargate fan.

Marvel probably wasn't suffering, but Disney has deep pockets. I totally agree, these are two companies that don't seem to have much to do with each other, but they are obviously looking at future profits and franchising out of the various intellectual properties. My concern is that they will dilute/pimp it like they have with everything else Disney.

LOL, Highschool Musical for Mutants

That might be fine as long as the mutants start gang fights.

Stargate was filmed about 5 minutes from my house.

As long as the movies are still following the comics, I could care less.

As I'm not a comic book fan I'm not sure who storm is or, for that matter, what a swirly exactly is; but send her over anyway. Maybe I can help. ;)

Seriously, how much worse can Disney F-up the comics beyond the recent releases on film?

OK, now that's just wrong. That's, that's just discusting.
I can't believe you even brought that up on a G rated site such as this. :D:rolleyes:

The first response I can see to this is the Disney legal department sending out thousands of cease and desist orders to "threats" to their "intellectual property." Just some more brands that Disney can extend copyright to for, what seems, thousands of years. You can be sure that none of the Marvel characters will end up in public domain under current law. Disney's gonna find a way to get them to rewrite it, again, in their (monetary) favor.

You Misunderstand ...

Why? I meant the Disney World theme park Hollywood Studios. Wasnt the park formerly called MGM?

Disney integrates everything into their parks. I cant see Spidey swinging from the castle with Cinderella in tow. We all know Prince Charming wouldnt be having any of that! Animal Kingdom makes no sense for Marvel. EPCOT doesnt really have a good tie in either that I can think of (except maybe what can happen from genetic mutation?).

MGM has always been (imho) the weakest of their parks. They really seem to struggle here. Marvels bench could give them movies to tap for additional features/rides/shows/etc etc. MGM/Hollywood studios is the ideal place for them to tie in Marvel. They already promote Disney Playhouse, Indiana Jones, American Idol, Cars, Toy Story, Muppets, Star Wars and others. Why not dump the weaker parts like Drew Careys Soundstage and replace with something stronger like a comic book section with X-Men, Thor, Spidey and the gang?

Also, on second thought, EPCOT runs 3D feature. Used to be Michael Jackson and is now (I believe) Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. Perhaps a Marvel experience in 3-D could be in the works??

And yes ... I know WWWAAAAYYYYYYYYYY too much about Disney. You can thank my wife and kids for that.

In regards to the money ... Who knows. Stan isnt exactly a 20-something anymore. He just got 4 billions dollars (a stunning full price offer) for his company. Who wouldnt jump? And Disney hasnt exactly been cranking out content they themselves think up so do what Microsoft does ... assimilate someone elses!!! :D

BTW - sorry for my punctuation. Old keyboard. Apostrophes arent working tonight.

Oh it’s not all that bad – I never implied there was anything in the toilet, except water.

I suppose though there could be such a thing as a “yellow” or “lumpy” swirly
