I just learned who Norah Jones Dad is. He is none other than Robbie Shankar. She grew up in Grapevine Texas. Her Mother never married Robbie. She was around her father untill she was nine, but from nine to eighteen she rarely saw him.

He is Ravi Shankar, the "immortal" Indian sitarist. The story I heard was that it was more of a one-night-stand and that she was raised by a single mom. Apparently Ravi didn't recognize or acknowledge her until recent years when the physical resemblance and musical talent made her very European looking mother's claim seem credible. In spite of Ravi's high-toned spiritual attitude, the dog still jumps over the fence now and again. He has at least one other daughter that he recognizes and who uses his name and she is a sitar up-comer who lives in the US.

And like Norah, is very pretty.
Oh Yeah they're pretty. If I were young and not married, I'd slide my bottom over glass shards just to hear Norah fart through a cell phone! Now thats lust. Norah is hot.:)

Sounds like ol' Ravi really took the "free love" part of the 60's counterculture to heart. :)

From what I have heard, he deplored all the attention he got, considering it to be rather crass and thinking that American hippies were shallow spiritual pretenders. Maybe it was his way of trying to improve the gene pool.

He didn't seem to mind when he joined up with Dylan, Harrison and Leon Russell at the Concert for Bangledesh

As luck would have it, I had spur of the moment tickets to see Ravi and his other daughter, Anushka in a concert a few days ago. Apparently he has had cancer and had to be helped onto the stage, had one of his proteges tune his instrument, but when he played, it was amazing that he can really still play. He is 87. The body has failed, but the spirit was still there. Everybody in the audience got all weepy when he said that it would probably be his last tour but he seems to have come to terms with crass Americans cheering and hollering.

What I find more interesting is what you must have been searching in order to find this thread

The sitar, and the music played by Shankar, is North Indian. From the stuff I've heard, I actually prefer the South Indian style, which has more fire, I find.

North Indian music is characterized by a very long term swell, so to speak. Like over the course of an hour.

There is zero harmony in any Indian classical music. Only sympathetic tones at best.

There is no fixed pitch system. You can blurt out any tone you want as the "Sa" (or our "do").

OTOH, their stuff might be the most melodic music in the world.

Ravi can tear it up.
