I just got used velodyne spl 1000. My question is what does the phase do, is it better to run 0 or 180.

Welcome to the forums. Waves that are in phase reinforce each other like this.

The phase angle of those waves is 0 degrees.

These waves are out of phase to varying degrees. When the down peak is right on the up peak of the wave below, the phase angle is 180 degrees, and they can cancel each other.

Now crossovers add phase shifts, and so does the position of your speaker and sub.

You need to see which setting produces the greatest bass output at crossover frequency by trial and error, or preferably measuring it if you have an spl meter.

Ideally the phase control should be continuously variable between 0 and 180 degrees, but you will have to settle for one or the other.

So its to put it into phase with the other speakers?

Yes, as close as it can be. When it is phased as close as possible with your other speakers, you will have the highest output in the crossover region.

whats the best way to figure out if it needs to be 0 or 180

Ideally you need a test disc with a sine wave track at your crossover frequency, and an spl. meter. Then you choose the setting with the highest reading in the crossover region.

Failing that you need to play a disc with a lot of bass, like a pipe organ, and have an assistant flip the switch, and see if you can tell which setting gives the biggest bass output.
