Hi everyone this place has a wealth of knowledge and would like to learn all I can. :)
Need a sub design that's a compromise between Home Theater and Music we are a 50% music/50% movies family. The 85L Shiva seems to be what I'm looking for. I like Hi-Hos 142L but not sure if a forward firing sub would be a good idea with a 4 and 8 year old around. Would like to use the Rythmik A250 but not sure which driver to go with. Cost is an issue since I haven't won the lottery but I know I can build a better sub for the cost of an entry level mass market clone. Listening area is 17'x17'x8' if that helps. I have searched but need a lesson in searching a forum 101.
What drivers would work with the Shiva and does it really matter if a driver is downward or forward facing these days?

What is your budget roughly? Sealed or ported enclosure? I like the Rythmik amps, I run an A350, and with amps like that, you will probalby need to shoot for ported (would probably need a bigger amp for sealed).

My budget is $300 and plan to go ported can't go sonotube because of WAF. Been looking at a couple of drivers and want to know what else is out there. The Classic Shiva is back, Daytons are popular the RSS315HF-4 and DVC310-88 look good. Still looking though. :D

The sonotube may have a low WAF, but so might a box unless you're a pretty good woodworker.;) I think the Shiva would work well, but you may want to look around at the TC Sounds website. They OEM all the woofers for SVS, among other companies.

20' hot-water heaters have been banned from this house. :( My next door neighbor is a carpenter and will build the box for me. Those TC drivers are crazy the TC-1000 is very tempting. :D

I would also check out the Dayton Titanic mkIII at 159.00 it is a good buy as well. The shiva was a great woofer from Adire as is the Koda. Not sure on pricing though. The site was quite weird from the last time I visited.

Must make a confession, though I like how the sonotubes sound I prefer a well constructed heavy box sub. Would like to improve my woodworking skills to make my own high end speakers.
What speaker design software is good for a beginner who wants to design a box sub which is good for HT and music with accuracy in mind? Is tuning a sub at 20Hz a good compromise?
