Noob question on "full analog upconversion"

I am looking at the Yamaha VX2600's claim of "full analog up-conversion to HDMI".

Would this mean that I could plug in my TiVo, whose best video is S-Video, and whose best audio is line out stereo and have the unit send the video signal up to my TV's HDMI port? Or does this only really apply to DVD players with a component video output?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

That is correct, you can input as low as composite video, and have it output on to either component or HDMI. It will also deinterlace and upscale the video as well, whereas the RX-V1600 will only upconvert and deinterlace the signal.

How good is it compared to external scalers?

Hi,

Anyone with comments about upconverted PQ of the 2600? How good is it compared to an external upconverter? Is a Video Processor better for the job?

Video Upscaling?

Ok, so I just got back from Tweeter who would not deal with me at all on the RX-V2600, so looking more carefully at the HTR-5990 they look pretty equivalent for the features I want.

The specific difference I can see from the specs is that the 2600 offers video upscaling, whereas the 5990 doesn't (both offer upconversion and deinterlacing). My LCD HDTV is 780p/1080i -- getting video up to 1080p seems overkill.

Given that I can get the HTR-5990 for $899 from B&H, and Tweeter want $1299 plus tax for the V2600, I am thinking the 5990 is the right way to go.

Anyone disagree?

Thanks in advance

That is correct, and the RX-V1600 is the same as the HTR-5990 except for the cosmetics. Your tv will scale the input to the tv's native resolution as well, so I really don't see much need to get the 2600 over the 1600 or 5990, unless your tv's scaler isn't very good.
