Noob question about dvd analog video into my AVR

So I have been having a fantastic time with my new Pioneer Elite VSX-01. Blu-rays through my PS3 are awesome... DVDs through my old DVD player come through nice (audio). But last night I decided to put on a DVD of a TV show that plays in 4:3. I quickly learned that my TV would no longer let me change the format to 4:3. I could only choose auto, etc... But it was forcing the format to come out at 16:9.

The DVD player is run into the AVR using your tyipcall white/red/yellow analog RCA cables, then output through HDMI to the LCD. If I run just the yellow to a seperate input on the TV bypassing the AVR altogether, i can set it to 4:3 no problem.

I don't think anything is "wrong"... i was just wondering WHY? Seems strange to me. Anybody care to school me?

what happens when you turn your video conversion off in the receiver?

Not sure i know how to do that. I have tried putting the AVR on "direct", which i think eliminates all processing except for EQ, speaker distance, etc. Matters not. If I run the video cable to the AVR first then to the TV, its comes out 16:9 no matter what. the 4:3 option on the TV is then greyed out.

Under the video paramaters menu, switch conversion from amp to through.

Video Parameters menu on the "on screen" menu in the AVR setup? Ill have to look there... don't recall seeing anything like that. THanks a ton!
