Well hers my Question. I am running HDMI out of my PS3 into the TV. Is it possible to run Analog/Optical out of the TV to an old receiver and have it function? Or would it have to be HDMI coming out of the TV into the receiver?

I don't have a PS3, but does it not have an optical out?

As expected, the Sony website was not much help at all while searching for audio outputs. Reinforcing the fact as to why I don't do business with the company.

ps3s do have optical out, so you can use optical out so you can run it from the ps3 to the receiver as well

Every TV I've ever seen will only pass digital to it's output when was generated by it's internal ATSC (digital) tuner, not from other sources fed into it. Other sources will be output as red/white analog stereo only, no matter how they were fed into the TV.

So sounds like I just need to get me a receiver that has an optical input. Run the HDMI rom PS3 straight to TV, and the Optical from the PS3 to the receiver.

I need to find a receiver, dont need anything super fancy. Right now I just have a bose sub with a couple acoustimass speakers hooked up to a nice cd receiver.
I have seen an RCA 5.1 system at WalMart that is actually a DVD player but that shouldnt matter (right?), and an Insignia 5.1 at BestBuy, and a refurb RCA 5.1 each for 100 bucks. Thats about the cheapest I can seem to find, plus they come with a couple extra speakers for me.

The other Alternative is a refurbished Harman Kardon receiver for $70 off ebay. What are your thoughts on this setup and these particular sets?
It opens up another question, the HK (and the Insignia) have HDMI input and output, however if I go PS3 HDMI, to Receiver HDMI, to TV HDMI will the sound be output through my speaker system or simply 'pass-through' to the TV without transferring the sound signal?

Im in an apartment so Im not after super high power, and dont need anything more than 5.1........

Any thoughts comments advice GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
